air intake restrictions?

I know the Taurus sho has HORRIBLE restrictions to reduce the NOISE at the air intake. Removing the restriction turns it into a wild beast (well, SOUNDS like one, anyways) Mostly because the SHO has secondary intake runners that open up at 3950 rpms (v6) and 3400 rpms (v8)
Is the Maxima similar here?

What? Mevi is a single runner design. Our intakes are not restrictive at all if that's what you're asking.

I read about "hacking up the airbox" or somethting like that. Is it worth the effort. I am just looking to hear a little more engine @ WOT, from inside the cabin.

Just cut some holes in the air box. Cut the side facing the fender and the side facing the front of the car.

you could get an aftermarket intake, ebay is the cheapest. Any intake mod you do will make it sound MUCH better.

Yes, cutting out a few panels of the bottom part of a maxima airbox will do the same thing. It gets very loud and much deeper.

And if I'm not mistaken, the maxima also has a variable cam duration thing like vtec unless they quit doing that after the 3rd gens.

Dave Sz,

I just came across this information on Maxmods & was wondering why they say the MEVI has 2 sets of runners & you say only 1 set?

1995-1999 Maxima
Middle Eastern Variable Intake (MEVI)
Description: This new intake replaces the old one bolted to the engine and gives the engine two sets of intake runners, a long set and a short set. An RPM switch will be needed to control the switch that changes intake runners. This modification goes well with the raised rev limiter of a Jim Wolf Technologies ECU MaximaEcus and will generate much much more power. The MEVI goes for about $500-600 and needs to be imported. The Courtesy kit will need a few extra parts.
Cheapest Price: $430 from http://www.courtesyparts.com/

They had it on 3rd gens, right?

I know because I drove one and had to replace the variable cam sprockets twice, the last time destroying the motor.

no variable cams on 4th gen to my knowledge.

i dont remember if the 5th gen 3.0L has em but i do know they have a variable intake manifold.

the mevi has to sets of runners cause when they reach the set rpm level they switch off to provide better air for higher engine rpms.
