Im about to get a 5sp tranny from a 97 maxima the owner of the car said that the tranny makes noice only while in 1st gear any other gear no noice or anything. My guess its the syncros are goin bad but im not sure so I would like to know if its syncro and how much would the rebuild cost ?

I had that problem, then it started to make noise in second. And a whinning sound when I put the car in neutral. Just got my tranny fixed. My synchros were alright. It turned out to be my transmission bearings. I think it was the main bearing and the main bearing seal. Of course while he was down there he said my clutch was shot. So $1000 later I've got a smooth tranny now and he topped it off with B&M fluid which is nice. I got quoted $1200 for new synchros, new bearings, and labor. I got another shop to do new bearings, new racing clutch and labor for $1000. He didn't say anything about the synchros so I'm assuming they are alright. Labor is bi*ch part of it. CAuse you know it's $500 to open it up so If your getting it where it's already accessable(off the car's engine) then take it to a few tranny shops and compare. research will save you hundreds. Good luck

I've got that problem now. There is a place here that said they could rebuild for $650, including labor but I'm a little skeptical. It is my 1st gear syncro that's shot but I'm afraid of what else it could be once they open it up. Clutch ggot replaced last year so that should be all good (I pray). Let me know what comes out of your situation. it would be interesting to know.

I'm not sure but I thought the first gear does not have a syncro.

sounds more like a bearing problem. its hard getting the old bearing pieces off when rebuilding as they cannot be pulled off (or nearly impossible to) so they must be cut off,, but you try cutting hardened steel and see how that goes. i wound up hitting it for about 2 hrs with a small sledge hammer and screwdriver to crack it off (times 2). putting the new one on wasn't hard at all.

Is the wind up noise in first gear normal? When you accelerate is it supposed to come on at like 2.5k rpm in 1st?

i dont think the sound should happen when going forward. the reverse gear will make a whining sound. can't really tell if your tranny is going to fall apart.

i suggest you see if you have any freeplay in your axle where it meets the tranny on the drivers side. try to wiggle it, if it moves in any direction, your bearings are shot.

That is a possible sign of the diffy bearing failure. To confirm that, check if it is leaking from the CV inputs.

urmab, I would pass on this unless you are getting it real cheap and are getting it rebuilt. Get a 98-2001 as those are free of the diffy bearing problem. If you do get it rebuilt, make sure they shim the bearings properly. Read the faq and motorvate for more info on this.

There are no leaks. I checked that before buying the car.

First gear definitely has a syncro...if you didnt have syncros you would have to double clutch everytime to get it in gear like old school trucks...

I had the exact same problem,

I though maybe it was normal but after a trip to the dealer, they found out that there was a bad ball bearing in the tranny, plus the input shaft had bad wear on it that made the tranny unfixable, so I had to get a new tranny.

Its most likely a bad bearing in 1st gear ( I only heard it in first), in which it shouldnt be a big deal to repair.

All gears have synchros. On the 95-96 I believe the 2nd gear synchro is different from others and on the 97+ 2nd and 3rd gear synchros are different than others. What goes into fixing the 1st gear bearing?
