Nissan dealer might be a little extreme. You would probably do better to take it to an independent mechanic that you trust. Also, when you are looking at it, look at everything. Look IN everything. Check under the hood. Look in every compartment. Check the carpet condition. Check inside the spare tire wheel. I have bought several cars and have always found telling information in the spare tire well. For example, when I bought my Max, I found a Kroger reciept and some marbles, which told me the previous owner was probably a family type person. If you buy it from a person, see what kind of person they are and that will likely tell you a lot about how the car was driven.
The mechanic will tell you a lot about it though. He can tell you all kinds of problems that you would never find. Then you can decide if it is worth it to you anyway, even with its faults. It will probably cost you about $50 to do that, so make sure you are very interested before you take it to them.
And don't forget the Carfax report. Not always 100% accurate and telling, but it still helps out a lot.

You could also go to Auto Zone Part stores and they run the computer on it and can tell you what all is popping up. That is if you are not trying to paend $ on a car that you don't own yet. Delaership may be extreme especially since the "diagnostic" may run you $100 bucks, plus they may tell you everything that is wrong with the car and not take into consideration that it is an older car. A car at a dealership that is more than a couple of years old usually seems ancient. I used to work in them, and that seemed to be the case.
