Phantom Grip LSD review

It has been about 5000 miles since I put in the Phantom Grip so I thought I would post my thoughts.

This thing is absolutely sweet. I was skeptical at first but a buddy of mine bought one for his Integra and I installed it for him. Well of course I had to take his car out afterwards and beat the snot out of it. I could not believe how well it stuck in the corners. After driving it I decided to get one for the max.

I had been looking into the Quaife and Stillen for a while but could not justify the cost. The Quaife is a helical gear LSD which is probably a little better but the Stillen is just a reman stock diff with a phantom grip (Vitek). The phantom grip cost me $270 from Jegs.

I installed it along with a Fidanza flywheel, Centerforce dual friction and of course a new drivers side diffy bearing. This upgrade is a must have if you want to keep tabs on all the VQ's torque. Now I can stomp on it in first and it actually goes. 5000 miles later and it still works like a dream and no problems. If you have any questions on install or whatever let me know.

Now all you have to do is wait for it to start shearing the spider gears and then look for a new trans. This produst is good for other cars but for the max it seems to be a POS.

Well Mike, apparently for the max the PG is ****. I heard you have to grind it down so it can fit right and then the spider gears shear badly.

click on the exploded view link in orange on front page. looks darn good.
as far as price, they are more expensive than pg, unfortunately. but probably much more reliable and durable!

ya...that's why Cattman would do the GD of 16 people or so, and have Kaaz make a BATCH for us Maxima owners.

BTW, glad you at least experimented w/ the LSD, seems almost noone want to do so. It's sad, because if we could get this deal w/Cattman, our cars would really pull out of first, without risking our "spider gears".

is the kaaz the same type of lsd as the phantom?? it uses miny clutch disc it looks like from their website...so wouldn't the wearing out of the miny clutches, and destroying out spider gears still be an issue...??

Actually Dave, I did a lot of research before choosing the Phantom Grip. There are two versions available for the max. 1 is for automatic and the other is for manual. The fit of the product is very precise. I measured it with feeler gauges and it was well within spec. The only way you could mess up your spider gears is if the surfaces are jagged or rough. The instructions say to check for this. Also the spider gears are hardened steel so is the Phantom grip. I did however taper the ends of my driveshafts just to make sure they had some extra room inside the diff, but it is not necessary. I am very picky when it comes to my max and I wouldnt put anything on it that was a pos.

I know people who have phantom grips and drive their cars very hard. No one has ever had a problem.

dave has always been a hater, look at any trend in here where someone is giving a review or trying to inquire on something "diffrent". dave with put in his 2 cents( i think this is out of envy since he makes no meaningful contribution to the maxima community). just ignore him and good luck with the LSD.

sadly. But given how cheap our trannies are in the 1st place, even if the DaveS fear-mongering pans out, a pg + new tranny is still cheaper than a kaaz/quafie/cusco lsd.

I'm planning on a 2k1 LSD myself in case the current one goes out. 3rd gear is stronger already but I plan to have the gears either cryo'ed or shot peened.

The Nissan Vlsd is only good for about a 30% lock at most.

Dont worry about my centerforce, Im not. Clutch failure isnt the fault of the clutch, but that of the driver. The dual friction is the most streetable clutch on the market because it grips hard and doesnt destroy your trans or your leg. Its all personal preference anyway. It depends what you need it for. If I was boosted I would probably be running full kevlar or ceramic disk, but Im not. I dont care if I am the only one using the cf, I like it. The one in my truck is at 50k and feels like new.

Anyway, the thread is about lsd's not clutches. It would be nice to be rockin a 6spd lsd tranny but thats not happening anytime soon. The pg is surprisingly tolerant to the vq's torque and cornering feels much more confident. No matter which brand you choose it is a worthwhile mod none the less.
