quick question

what does the 194 stand for in the guage bulbs? and are there any other specs i need to know to replace it?

194 is the bulb type. You need to know the number and color (clear, I assume...maybe green). IDK, I have white ones, which have a blue-ish hue when they are not illuminated.

and this may be dumb but are they leds or regular bulbs? i haven't gone in there yet to look. just wanna know in advance.

they are filament i dont know if they are dual. but there is a difference in 194, and 158 or whatever bulbs.

Regular (non-LED) from the factory.

would an LED work in there? like these:

supposedly they're 194... is that possible and if so what would be better, a bulb or an LED like this?

if you want a real led, just wire one up in there. the led bulbs sold on ebay are usually crap quality.
