Replace or Fix tranny?

I was told I need a differential bearing replaced and that it would run me close to 1,000 to fix. I'll need to do something with my tranny because it has over 150k on it. I've read that I can put a 5th Gen. tranny in my 4th and that for some reason they are a little smoother and better than the 4th gen's? I guess my real question is should I try to find a good 5th gen tranny and swap it out with my 4th gen. or just get the bearing replaced? I'm just not sure which way would be cheaper or better for my car.
thanks.

find a rebuilt or a used tranny.... if you look hard enough, you could fit within $850 for everything.

If you get your's rebuilt there is a pretty high likelyhood that the shop will shim the bearings incorrectly just as the factory did. You have a 95-97 correct? If you get a new one make it a 98-2001. Personally I would (and did) go for a 5th gen one.

Yeah, I have a 97. If I get a 5th gen, are they better because the installer doesn't have to shim it?? And as for taking it somewhere to get done, should I look for a place that specializes in trannys? I just dont want it to get shimmed wrong and be doing this again sooner than I should.

It's in the rebuilding process that they need to shim it. Any competetant mechanic should be able to install it. Read this for more info http://www.motorvate.ca/mvp.php/804.
