Drop resistor Bi-Colour LED

I know the drop resistor is a neet little mod for us autotragic guys but I though it needed a little BL!NG factor, so I got myself a Bi-Colour LED (red/green) and a relay.

Now my problem is I'm not great with electronics (i managed to blow up a toster once.. diffrent story). I've included a diagram of a possible setup for the LED to switch from green to red when the microswitch is tripped by the TB. The only problem is with this setup is I'm afraid that it might fry my TCU by grounding it out. I could revise it so the DR is run off the relay but it would take me another 2 hours to draw it out in paint.

So, will this setup blow my TCU by grounding it out or is it ok? Any other comments or ideas would be great

WOT/Switch Relay LED(ignore the resistors i'll find out which ones i need later)

if you put a resistor (specifically 495 ohm, figured at a 20ma draw, leaving 2.1v) between the WOT switch and the relay you wouldnt be grounding it. and another resistor (roughly 5 ohm?) to drop it another tenth of a volt for the second color. man its been years since i went to school for this(tech school in 99).

So, stick a resistor between the microswitch and the relay to... prevent it from blowing up?

the relay would be running off the current coming off of the DR, so there would be no point in droping it to the voltage i need for the LEDs.

Im confusing myself

care to edit my pic and repost?

did some reading on the dr mod, why would you say you would ground the tcu (traction control, correct?) im not familiar with that relay, so i guess im kinda lost too. btw the led is backwards in the schematic. im still thinking, if i come up with anything ill let you know, but someone here should have done this before, just keep bumping.

thanks, Ive come up with a revised layout. I'll run the DR cutout and the LED off the relay and use a 12v through the switch to trip the relay, I think that will work ok

OK so my first diagram didnt work out, (it was a 120V relay not a 12V LOL)
here is my second diagram complete with resistor values.
Now where should I tap my 12V switched source? Pref somewhere in the dash so I can keep it all close together and clean

what you need is a DPST switch (like 2 switches in one) so you can keep the two ciruits separate. Right now you have a SPST switch, which is messing up your circuits. You would have the DR side be like a normal switch, then the other side of the switch (its entirely isolated from the DR side) would trip the LED.

something ignition controlled, cigarette lighter would work, or just go straight to the ignition harness. glad i could help, sorry im a little rusty.

I hooked it up to the light dimmer switch on the dash, but the LED is acting funny. I hooked up the correct resistors and only got green, a fractionaly darker green when I tripped the switch but still green. The only way I got red out of it was trying random resistors and eventually blew the thing out.... soooooooo dammit, I wonder why It wont give me the red

2.0 and 2.1 volts are pretty hard to get exact with basic led values, also the current might make a difference too. just have to play with it...otherwise they sell leds with 3 leads..one ground and one + for each color...glad it worked (kinda) though.

Well, it turns out that the led only emits red when your switch its leads (+ to - and - is +)(cost me $10 worth of LED’s to find this out). So now I have it hooked up to the r/y wire as my + and the b/y wire as my - (these are the wires going into the dimmer switch in the dash). The wiring is the same as my second diagram, but I used one of the DRs wires (which turns out to be a ground anyways, making this a whole lota work for noting LOL) to ground the relay.

It works fine if you fire it up and just drive, BUT if you turn the car off and put it in acc or on or use my remote start the LED stays on, or when you turn the lights off it turns green. Strange things... Im gona work the bugs out of it in the next few days then post a final write up for anyone that wants it.
