Catalytic Converters

During a recent install of a y-pipe on my 96 SE, I noticed my cat looked very bad. It's still in one piece and doesn't have any holes, but it looks like if I touched it, it would crumble. I'd like to get a new aftermarket cat, but I'm sure those 30 dollar ones won't do anything for emissions, or do they? Are there any other options besides the OEM $200 model and the POS $30 model??

stillen

Stillen has a high flow cat for the max for about $237.

check the stillen web site for it. Not too sure about any others?

Your Y-pipe is 2.5" in diameter right? the stock cat is 2.25" in diameter how did you make it fit, or am I wrong?

Sorry, what I should have said was "attempted install", the bolts where also rusted to hell, I'm going to have the garage crack them for me on Monday. But I believe the y-pipe should match up with the stock cat, I haven't heard of anyone else with that problem yet.

I wouldn't mind getting the stillen cat, but it's just too expensive. I'd like to spend around 100 for something aftermarket but doesn't have to be anything special.

the stock cat is actually 2.5" diameter when you take your exhaust apart look at the gasket on the cat side it will have residue because the stock y and the rest of the piping is 2.25". idk why nissan decided to do that but its kinda cool in a way. but all that doesnt matter for me cause i have the "junk" testpipe just take a look... everyone hates on me for it but thats what i bought so to bad for them. bad things about it are that it gives a little more rasp to exhaust note and it also makes the rear O2 sensor go wack and make your car suck gas like a bizatch -ryan

The rear o2 sensor should not affect gas mileage, it just monitors the cat to make sure it's functioning. The front o2 sensors are the ones that the ECU reads to adjust A/F ratios and such.

So then tell us why you have it on there? For the 1/3hp gain maybe?

BTW - Your windshield wiper appears to be stuck in the middle of your windshield. I think thats a common problem with Honda's.

My fault brother, but if your converter is going bad that usually means your engine isnt functioning properly. Swapping the converter with something else is just prolonging the problem. I'd suggest you'd have it looked at.

Any fault codes?

High flow cats don't add any power for a Maxima, all it does is make your car smell funny. The rear O2 effects performance when the front O2 sensors fail. That is when the ECU relies on hte rear O2.
