how to tell year max? differnt ways?

ok so i am pretty sure i bought i 99 it was a while ago but i never really felt the need to check until today and when i did i found the date of 5/98 inside the door jamb and on the seatbelt tags and whatnot were like 3/98 i thought that was messed up so what letter or number is the year in the vin number and where is all the locations i think my car is shady because i ran the main vin on carfax and it was all clear yet the first time i went to take the spare out there was glass loaded all over in the spare well. and so i took the back seat butt part out and the same thing glass all over and it looks in the trunk to have had an accedent. u cant tell anything from the outside though...so someone where can i find all the vins and also would a max made in 5/98 be a 99 model? if anything then what would be the big differnces in the 98 vs the 99? -ryan

only cosmetic changes b/w '98 & '99, this should help you out some

'98
- Debut of Sterling Mist Color, Digital Odo. & side airbags (see deluxe seating pkg.)
- Fuel Gauge now inverse of '95-'97 models
- gauges (SE or not) all have red needles
- Deluxe Seating Pkg - heated seats/mirrors, low washer fluid light, side airbags (you had to get ABS before getting the pkg.)

'99
- Debut of TCS (Traction Control), Immobilizer, & Crimson Blaze Red only for SE-L
- some color revisions, new color (former color) - Lakeshore Blue (Neptune Blue), Icelandic Pearl (Arctic White Pearl), Sherwood Green? (Deep Evergreen), Sunlit Sand (Pebble Beige)
- redesigned audio headunits & auto. cc
- SE-L w/ titanium tinted wheels, gauges, badging (also included "SE Limited" badges on both sides, "SE Limited" logo embossed on floor mats & leather seats (also perforated)

From the faqs:
"1998 - Side air bags available (with deluxe seating package), ‘Cold weather package’ replaced by ‘Deluxe seating package’, red gauge needles on all trim levels (95-97 GXE/GLE had white needles), digital odometer (with two trip meters), climate control redesign, Fuel and temp. Gauges now ‘Mirror image’ instead of facing the same direction.

1999 - Emissions equipment and ECU wireing similar to 5th gen models, SE limited edition available, security chip in key, head unit redesign, ‘ambient temperature’ feature added to automatic climate control, three point seat belt for rear center position.

On CA emission 99's Front pre-cat built into header, two extra oxygen sensors to monitor pre-cats (total of 4), Swirl valve in intake to improve emissions. Special aftermarket Y-pipe required and only 1 pre-cat can be removed."

5/98 is a 98 model. I know that with the 95-98 if the car is made between let's say 7/95-6/96 it's a 96, 7/96-6-97 is a 97. Not sure if they changed it for the 99 but why would they?

Check out www.vehicle-history.com for all the information about vehicle identification numbers. Generally the 10th digit in the VIN is the year of the car. A W would be a 1998 and an X would be a 1999. I hope this helps.
