rear wheel bearings
Hi all,
I have a noise in my rear wheel, definitely not the brakes -more of a vibration at speeds over 40 mph only after the car has gone a few miles. It's starting to hit sooner from a cold start. It also comes and goes with sideways pressure as in freeway ramps. I'm convinced it is my left rear wheel bearing. I have removed the old, but it seems tight and smooth. Any experience with these going would be helpful: such as typical symptoms ( so I can confirm my guess) or replacement strategy (can it be re-greased).
Thanks,
Greg

There is a rear wheel bearing that is also a part of the hub. I had mine replaced about 111K miles. only one went bad. That's about the right place and Nissan is the only place you can get them from.

I have a '98 and the left rear wheel starting making a howling sound. The part is called a rear wheel hub assembly. It cannot be greased only replaced as a unit from the Nissan dealer. About a hundred bucks installed by the tire dealer I do business with..

Rear wheel bearing problems are common enough on maxima's that our local alignment shop had them on the shelf when mine went bad.
The typical means of diagnosis is noise...the noise gets louder with more weight on it (a right turn for a left bearing) and quieter with less weight. The grease is not the problem. Small imperfections have formed in the metal parts and cause noise as they roll over each other. Once the noise starts it will generally continue to worsen. It can take a long time for the noise to progress into a failure, or it may never fail.
Depending on year you will need to replace the hub and possibly the ABS sensor. They changed the sensor ring sometime in the last couple years requiring a new sensor. The hub has a double row radial bearing pressed in it, but comes off just like the old style taper bearing hubs...meaning the reassembly torque is critical! I called some of my old bearing reps trying to get just the bearing but apparently its a Nissan exclusive part.
The job is not that hard to do yourself....so dive in if you have a decent set of tools. try thepartsbin.com or aaanissanparts.com for prices and see how it comes out.
Good luck,
JB
