Smog test problem / "#0325 Knock Sensor"
Smog test problem / "#0325 Knock Sensor"
I took my 96 GLE to be Smogged the other day (I'm in LA). The test showed the emissions were fine and the car would have passed, except that the on-board computer reported something funky:
"This vehicle failed the MIL/Check Engine Light Test due to OBD Communications Failure."
I had my mechanic run a diagnostic and it reported "#0325 Knock Sensor".
He said he's seen this before on other Nissans... He said I've got to take it to the dealer. He's seen this on an Xterra before and it ended up costing over $800 to repair. He's not sure if they replace the knock sensor or just reset something, but he doesn't want to do the repair himself because he can't return parts to Nissan that he doesn't use.
Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a better fix that taking it to the dealer and spending near a grand? It seems really ridiculous to spend this much money to pass a smog test when my vehicle's emissions are all perfect...
Help!

The KS code is actually 0304, so make sure that is what it is.
you can get the part for like $90 on ebay.
The dealer charges so much because they take off the intake manifold. Here's how to replace it the easy way. http://www.skippynet.com/maxima/knocksensor.htm, and http://www.motorvate.ca/mvp.php/507.

Here's how to check the codes yourself http://vbxmaxima.8m.com/ecu.html (or just bring it back to the mechanic). Here's the decoder http://vbxmaxima.8m.com/ecudecoder.html. Doesn't look like they go up to 25, so that was probably a misprint. It most likely is the KS, it is quite a common problem. It's not hard to replace as long as you or somebody else can fit their hand in there.
I had a code stored in mine as well, just before the smog test. I reset the ECU and drove 125 miles (in order for you to pass the smog test, a recently reset ECU must have performed all of its self-tests. This is done while driving and over a period of many miles), passed the test, and moved on with life.
