Cleaning upper intake manifold...

Should I use the carb cleaner I got to clean up the throttle body, or do I need a different chemical? It's never been cleaned out, with 118K miles on the car. What I could see past the butterfly plate looked pretty nasty, but I couldn't get in there from the intake end of the TB.

Will I need to replace gaskets when I take the UIM and TB off, and if so, what Nissan part #'s?

Thanks for the help.

This comment is not based on experience, only on observation. Nissan warns against using chemical cleaners on the throttle body because it might damage an anti-stick coating it is supposed to have. At Kragen Auto I noticed in the carburetor cleaner section a spray-can item that claims to be specifically for Teflon-coated throttle body cleaning. It happened to be cheaper than all the carburetor cleaners. I wonder it it's just something mild, like alcohol?

Many people on the org seem to be unconcerned about pouring cleaners through the fuel or vacuum hoses, so maybe there is nothing to be worried about in practice.

Right, that's what I was planning on doing.

Got one you want to donate? That's the only way I'll be able to put one on in the near future

No problems with the teflon coating robert1947 mentioned?

Did you take the UIM off, or are you talking about cleaning just the TB? If you did take the UIM off, did you have to replace gaskets?

I took my TB off last year so I could clean it from both sides and get deeper into the intake manifold. The gasket for the TB is about $4 or $5 and very easy to replace.

Got lots of dirt out of there.

Not sure what the gasket part# is though. Just asked the parts guy at the nissan dealer when I called. Make sure you call them first. It's not a part many dealers keep well stocked. I had to call 3 places before I found a dealer that had one left in stock.

My local Pep Boys has two varieties.

1. Carb/Choke Cleaner - it specifically says on the can not to use in fuel injected vehicles

2. Throttle/Air-Intake Cleaner - it specifically says on the can that it is safe to use in fuel-injected vehicles with teflon coated parts...

Both types are $3 bucks I believe - CRC is the manufacturer..

& Here (see the Teflon safe marking):

Thanks for the help. I checked the can of carb cleaner I have, and it says not to use on fuel injected cars. Dammit -- shoulda read the warnings before I used it on my TB. Hope it doesn't screw things up. Hasn't so far . . .

There is another product you can use called Sea Foam. You use dump small amounts into the brake line booster. It cleans out carbon.
