tie rod loose?

my mechanic says my tie rod is loose and might cause some steering wheel shaking....how much is this usually to fix ? Also my mechanic (supposedly)replaced the entire EGR system , but the sensor just popped up again! what else could it be if the whole thing was swapped from my old engine? It seems unlikely that both egr systems were bad. Also, there is a strange "clunk" sound, almost like a very quite horn, but from the rear end. Happens every time I stop and the car sits.....like everytime I park and while I am walking away from the car, maybe about 20 ft away I hear a muffled "clunk".....sometimes sitting at light to....what could this be? any help? thanks!

Ok here is how to tell if your tie rod is bad. Jack your car up, in the front grab one of your front wheels with left hand on 9oclock and right on 3 oclock. Push in and out if there is movement then you prolly have a bad tie rod. Now you need to find out if the inner one is bad or outer. Point being if there is side to side movement you need a tierod. Take it in and you will find out which is bad inner or outer. For the EGR when I replaced my old motor with a new. The egr was swapped. I was pulling codes for EGR HIGH FLOW. Make sure all connections are ok and vac lines are in correct locations. If they all check get a new EGR system...

I thought if you had wheel play in the front it meant you had a bad wheel bearing.

if the wheel has wheel play if your hand is in the 12 and 6 oclock position and it plays, then you have a bad bearing... if it is just playing when you move it from 9 and 3 oclock then its the tie rod...

when you say push in and out, do you simply mean in the direction in which the wheel would turn normally (in the case of someone turning the wheel?)

because ... wouldnt your wheel always turn the way its supposed to? I noticed when changing my brakes that mine will move a little when im torquing the bolts.

Can you tell me maybe what my problem is? (i also think i have a bad tie rod though, i get this slight ******* sound, not loud enough to be a *clunk* caused from when the direction of force changes on my front left tire. if i have it on jack stands and i hold the tire, and rotate it forward and then with some decent force stop its rotation and go in the opposite direction, once the direction changes i get the little *****/pop sound.)

i also get alot of it when turning the wheel at very low speeds (i.e. pulling into a parking space and straightening out the wheels)

and generally, what's the cost of parts/labor to replace the inner/outers?
