Hit high manhole with DAMAGE Help...56K warning

Very bad day today. I was driving some co-workers back to Brooklyn after work (because Im a good guy). I went over a high manhole cover (Usually I'd clear it) and since the car was packed and Im dropped (I never let more than 4 people in my ride at once) I hit...F*@k!!! Well the car feels alot of vibration around the bottom of the car and the shifter when I push the gas. Its also alot louder especially at WOT. It sounds cooler but not for the right reasons. But after looking under the car I see the damage. I'll post some pictures. You guys tell me what you think concerning how much damage and the cost It would probably be... Is this an excuse for a new exhaulst? or can it be a cheaper fix? Anyway leave some feed back please...

-Alex

I was looking for a replacement... Whats up with warpspeedperformance? Theres a stainless steel T-304 or aluminized... which is better and why? And How about the CustomMaxima Y-Pipe any suggestions?

i have a suggestion.
get a budget y pipe,
and any muffler you want, flowmaster, magnaflow, borla whatever.
and have an exhaust shop make you your 2.25-2.5'' B pipe.
have them throw it all together it's much cheaper.
exact same performance gain.
and you can add different types of resonators and mufflers to change how it all sounds.

yeah it doesnt look that bad, but should you y-pipe be dangling like that? doesnt seem right.

the rest looks like it survived.

Well the exhaust is dangling from the y-pipe to the b-pipe... acually the b pipe is smashed up toward the bottom of the car. It doesnt hang low as it did before the impact. As the stock b-pipe is notorious for hanging low. It was the part that hit the manhole cover. Now the b-pipe is tucked up high. And the hit pulled everything from the y-pipe back toward the muffler. The y-pipe is not suppose to look like that it seems that the flex section is pulled apart exposing the ribbed pipe underneth it. Thats where all the noise is coming from... I might just need a Y-pipe, cat and b-pipe???

And the budget pipe is painted? What the difference between MIG and TIG welded?

Since when is the b-pipe notorious for hanging too low? Never heard of that. The y-pipe hangs low because the hangers aren't there. In the 3rd pic, those orange/rusted prongs should be inside the hangers. I don't see the hangers or the support bracket that holds the y-pipe/cat up. Also from the pics it just looks like there is really no other damage except for that crunched up clip in the first pic.

If you think you will have problems with snow rusting the pipes.....yours don't look too bad right now....get the Stainless steel one. Warpspeed is a good brand. I have their aluminized one, and it is great. Will give you a great power boost anyway that you will enjoy.

yup your y pipe's flex section is streched like a limo. its at least 2-3" longer. not good.

I hate the 98 O2 sensor 's' pipe, that thing drops the B pipe real low.

Dave: look under your 96 and you wont see the 's' pipe, so your pipe is not low.

Contact the town/city about the manhole....take pics and everything of where it happened and they will pay to have everything repaired

PoePoe, I should take some pictures of the road... Especially before they re-pave it. Theres a strech of road about 6 blocks thats stripped of asphalt with all of the manholes and other pipes and covers sticking out...

Dave, the B-pipe where you said the damage is was the lowest part of my exhaust... recently I replaced the hangars because they rusted off and I requested that the shop weld them higher to get some more clearance... My 98 B-pipe sticks out low... you dont see it becausae it all crushed up...

Maxima10to1, yes thats my acordian Y-pipe... I definately need to replace it. I guess while Im at it Ill get the High Flow cat. The B-pipe is way too large and crunched up for me so thats out...

I'll price out the custom piping from the exhaust shop compared to the Warpspeedperformance system w/ Magna flow Muffler??? Someones selling an Ebay Y-pipe... I shouldnt trust that should I???

Looks to me like the resonator caught the edge of the manhole and that caused all the damage. That's why I try to roll over manholes with either front wheel instead of going over them with the body of the car. I was gonna say, why do you have an acorion in your pipe? The stock flex is longer that's why it didn't look stretched to me. Holy ****, I just noticed the hangers in the 3rd pic. It looks like the accordion and flex are stretched by at least 6". Please don't be stupid and waste your money on a high flow cat.

Yeah It did stretch it back a bit... The situation was a mess load of different pot holes, sewer caps and other smaller square caps about 4" or more out of the street... it was like land mines couldnt avoid it... i was just thinkin that since the Cat was old and rusted removing it would be a pain. But besides that would the cat be much of a difference high flow or not? id rather put the extra 100$ more or less into the Y-pipe etc.

Just use it as an excuse for a Y pipe and cat back

Was it in a construction zone or normal street? Where was it at?

If I'm not mistaken you might be able to contact DOT and try to get some money for it. If it was a construction zone your out of luck... theres nothing you can do about that...

It was near the on ramp at 62nd street and York Ave. Thats where the Mobil station is at by the FDR... I guess it might be construction because the street was grinded down thats why all of the metal street caps where very high... ill try anyway I got a number to complain 212 669-8750 this is for NYC...

Wow, talk about a good excuse for a new exhaust.

You need everything from the headers back. Warpspeed would probably be the cheapest one-stop-shop.

Also, about your shifter. If it is anything like my old cars, it sits right over the exhaust so it's rubbing guaranteed.

Good luck amigo!

yeah well, if ure in brooklyn youll need a new exhaust every 3 fucccin weeks if ure not careful....almost pointless to have performance mods in the city...ure just in a hurry to hit a pothole....

I dont know If Im getting the headers but definately Warpspeed Y-pipe and probably the rest of the exhaust since my resonator is dented... Im bringing it to Jeff at Maximumtuning to check it out...It is true that I drive too fast for a dropped car in the city...

So what would be rubbing?? The vibration of the exhaust on the bottom of the shifter?? I figure the only damage was the exhaust... I hate driving with that noise... Even If my girl says: "cool it sounds like a V8 Mustang" No sweetheart not cool... If there was some performance mods, than thats another story... Is getting the rest of the exhaust after the Y-pipe gonna make such a diffence or is the Y-pipe enough???

the shifter rods and what not are just above the exhaust, mostly the cat, and i bet the tranny shift linkage and the cat are rubbing, unless you have the stock heat shields in place. then its the exhaust and heat shield hitting each other.

Is this a major problem? I had my heat sheilds removed from the rear of the Y-pipe and the Cat...I know the exhaust is pushed up toward the car...

im a bk speed demon, yo u just have to know the streets on ure regular routes.....i know on certain parts of flatbush i have to swerve because of a pothole here or there, and i have to just slow down over certain humps, and on some parts its smooth sailing for like 10 blocks straight....blah blah, u get my point, but it is a bish to drive in the city....
