1998 Maxima GLE gas mileage
1998 Maxima GLE gas mileage
Recently I bought a used Maxima (78K on it), I got a mixed (city and highway) gas mileage 21, is this normal? Will Tunning-up increase the gas mileage? I am using #89 gasoline. I'm considerring to do a tune-up. Thanks.
First off, follow the owner's manuel and use at least 91. The VQ is a high compression engine and you need premium fuel to resist knock. I think there is a good article related to this in the FAQ.
21mpg isn't too bad depending how much city driving you do, especially in Boston. When you take a roadtrip, get the mileage then. Should be around 28-29. Autos, if you can believe it, get a bit better gas milege due to thier taller final gearing. Still glad I have a 5spd though. The best I have gotten is 32 mpg driving around 60 mph.
Tune up is always a good idea. If gas mileage isn't what it is supposed to be dirty throtle body, bad knock sensor, off- allignment can all be culprits. You have pretty low miles so I am guessing it just need normal maintenence. Let us know how you make out.
