maybe its because your dad's 98 5spd doesn't have 200 lbs of stereo equipment in it

Its the Autobot Matrix and the Flux Capacitator which make the 98's the fastest.

lexx426....re-read my post....I don't think you got it....I was saying that the later year 4th gens might have more restrictive emissions, but it doesn't pull timing when you go to WOT...I know, I used my auterra on my car (a '95) and my friends '99 max....I was being sarcastic about the ecu swap....if a 95 or 96 is at all faster than later year 4th gen's, it would prolly be stock for stock....cause as stated b4, it's all attributed to lighter stock wheels and less restrictive emissions, but all the later year 4th gens I have driven have seemed more powerful infact....but that is prolly largely attributed to the fact that I have 13X,XXX miles or so....

The '95-'96s had carburators and distributors and they got rid of that in '97 because Nissan was struggling financially and had to cut costs.

Dude, it's been PROVEN that the timing gets retarded 5* on 97-99's for safety and emission reasons. With the 5* timing retard, there is virtually ZERO chance of detenation, albeit the loss of some power. With the normal overall timing in the 95-96's, it definately gets a significant advantage when you go into WOT mode.

I think you guys are confused with the 4.5gen Canuck spec with Euro JDM fuel rails. It clocked the fastest in Honda Tuning mag. In that mag only because those were the only years the VQ30DE featured VTCs.

I am just goin off of what my auterra registered...and no such timing retard occurs more than what occurs on the the 95/96's.....they both registered the same timing...and like I said this was on a friends 98 and my 95 for comparison....in addition, I will test my mom's '99 I30 2morrow...to further prove this....

on the auterra....when you go from partial throttle and just peg it to initiate the WOT IG timing map, the timing drops on both cars into the teen's like 15 degrees and then as the rpms increase throughout the gear, they started to go into the 20's to finally about 25 degrees at redline or so....

ask steVTEC....he also did a IG timing study on his 99 max and graphed his timing using and OBD software and made a huge, detailed study/write-up...

I think what craig mack is saying is that when you floor it, the ig timing drops dramatically initially, which of course happens....when you are giving less then WOT (>93%) according to when the map switches over, timing is around 30 to 40 degrees depending on load and rpm (cruising basically) which is why people probably have been confused and thought the timing is being retarded more on the later generation 4th gens.... what they haven't done is compare a 95/96 maxima like I have....

The poor souls in this thread.

And to add to Sprints comment, the fastest stock auto is also a 97.
