Its in the stickies, 95 96 had a different front bumper, grill, and foglights and back bumper trunk and tail lights than a 97-99.
Engine and transmission were the same. Also different were the options on speedos, wheels, cupholders and colors.

Bottom line: If you are looking for a used 4th gen maxima, go for the one that's in the best shape and the lowest mileage you can find. I'd recommend getting an SE with leather if you can find one (any year). The differences between years are pretty tiny, really. Almost not worth mentioning.
Just my two cents. I've got a 1995 with over 120k miles and she's running strong. No major problems to speak of beyond normal maintenance.

I have a 97' Maxima with 105k miles on it. I've used Mobil 1 the whole time at 3k intervals. The engines run great on these cars, even with 100-150k miles.
Look for a 97-99 SE with a 5-speed.
Try to buy from a private person who has maintenance records. Single owner. Check to make sure the CV boots aren't cracked or leaking grease.
The 5-speeds are hard to find.

yea, thats true, it happened to me. but i like my 95
the cv boot is behind the front brakes and i guess its just to keep your axle greased, its like a rubber boot.

IMO the best year for Maxima is '98
To answer your ? b/w '96 and '97 differences, its all cosmetic exterior and interior-wise, for '98 tho. the gauge cluster changed a little, the fuel gauge is inverse and the odometer is digital

95 is the fastest
99 is the slowest due to a change in trying to lower the emissions via exhaust
i drove 2 98's and i liked them both
i have a 95
the 95 and 96 styles are getting very dated
go for a 98

I have 95 GLE and its amazing, it has about 155k miles and I've had it since it is ten, it's amazing, but I wanna start to race around in it, but for now its stock and all.

'99 is the slowest??? Why didn't anyone tell me??
Actually I owned a '97 and a '99 for a short time and the '97 did feel quicker but I just put that down to the Stillen CAI on it. Still it turns out that less than 3000 miles after I sold it the 5sp tranny self destructed so it was a financially inspired decision. (No I had no idea, and I'm still friends with who I sold it to!)
