is it bad to have a REMOTE START on a 5spd?
hey guys i have a 98 max SE 5 spd and im plannin on gettin the VIPER 791xv (remote start/ security system)......is it bad for the car to have a remote start on a 5spd?
any advantages or disadvantages?
any advantages or disadvantages?
lol xarfox. The disadvantage to that is that if u ever leave ur car in gear and you try to start it, it might take off on u. Ive seen it happen a few times. Advantages is that your car will be warm in the winter time when its cold outside.
would it hurt my car mechanically? liek mess up the starter....etc.....i kno i will have to leave my car in neutral from now on i was just wondering if it would be bad for the car to have one put in....
yea the reason why im gettin one is cuz i kno a professional installer that will do it for free and also my keyless entry remote is starting to go out....the range is gettin extremly poor range....and since the VIPER 791xv is a 2 way security/remote start it should be alot better than our stock alarms....THEY SUCK!.....the only thing i was worried about is the remote start being hard on my starter or whatever it might harm...i guess i just have to make sure its out of gear when i turn off my car
i got a 5spd w/a starter, mechanically its fine, well to my knowledge. but i would invest in this thing for 5psds...i dont know wut its called but it senses if u car is in gear...and it wont allow start up...and there is also another thing that makes it so that if the ebrake isn't up...it wont start either....
works well, and it'll take people (potential thieves) some times to figure out how to start ur car, if u leave it in gear w/o the ebrake

could u find out wat he uses so we can get one also?

you got too much time on your hands.....
ive installed atleast 10 of these for many 4th genr's here and off the org. And a ton of other 5spd cars, STI's, S/A4's, GTI's, etc.... Two of them(4th and 5th gen) had their cars take off. One hit a poll and caused $2g of damage(mechanic left it in gear after being worked on
) the other his dad left the car in gear on his driveway and it went through the garage door... $3g later both the car and doors were ok.
Be sure whoever installs your system you have them install a toggle switch on the clutch wire. That way if you take the car in for service you can trip the line and the car will not remote start. And then once you have the car back you can flip it again and be back to remote start.
be safe!

most shops i know wont even install this, let alone the one time you leave it in gear and put it through the back of the garage. I wouldn't do it, but i'm a wierdo. I'm also the same guy who doesn't see why you can't just start your car and go inside :-P

i got a remote start on my 5 speed, you just have to bypass the clutch switch, or you can move that switch to the ebrake so that if the ebrake isnt up it wont start. i just bypassed it. ive got a remote start kill switch for the times when im working under the hood or i park it in gear. also, mechanically theres no problems with adding remote start as long as its done correctly. i installed mine myself, but i also do car audio and alarms for a living. i say go for it and be safe with it. i put my car in gear and remote started just to see what would happen. with the ebrake on it just jumps a foot or so and dies, with the ebrake off, itll definitely start moving. and on the matter of the ebay 2 way paging alarms, 2 of my buddies have them and they really arent bad at all. i was impressed myself. but in the end you would be better off getting a viper or code alarm or something along those lines. just get what your budget allows and youll be happy.
I used a trick on my 300zx that I got from the 350z forum. I wired a magnet sensor from a house alarm to the clutch switch. I mounted the sensor to the edge of my shifter console and the magnet to the shifter. If my shifter is in gear, it doesn't make contact with the magnet, not giving a signal to start. If the shifter is in neutral, there is contact with the magnet and it will start.
