wouldn't a bad coil pack set off the CEL?

I have a multimeter and would like to test them. (I also have a 99)How do you do it? what contact goes where? I have the toys at my disposal. Also, I heard about cleaning them with alcohol from somewhere, maybe I read it here. Whats the deal with that? DOH! didnt see DavidT's response.
