New Coil Paks...WOW
I have had my Max for almost 3 years now and recently one of the coil paks went bad. I just got the new ones on today (Thank You Nissan Certified Warranty!) and I must say that it makes one heck of a difference with the new ones. Even before the one went bad it didnt run this good. Its just ashame they cost so much to replace for normal maintence.

I understand that a vast batch of 99's came from the factory with defective coils that will likely have to be replaced at some point, but I've never heard that the 99's create an environment that causes failure of new ones any quicker than in other model years.
Am I misunderstanding you, or are you saying that even if you simultaneously replace all 6 coils with new Mitsubishi coils, there is something specific to the 99 that will cause even the new coils to fail quicker than other model years?
I've got to replace my coils right away due to at least one bad one, but this will certainly impact my decision to replace just the bad coil or all 6, as well as whether I look for a used one or go all out on 6 new Mitsubishi coils.
So what's the facts, guys?

the coils are the things that sit on top of your spark plug. that long rubber thing. if you still don't know what I'm talking about..
then just think like this.
the coils are connected to wires and the coil trows power into the spark plug in order for the spark to happen. I just can't remember names right now. so i can't be anymore specific.
had too many exams and I'm ready to go to sleep now.

I've noticed a lot lately when sitting at a stoplight, occasionally rpms will drop a bit with a very noticeable stumble of the engine. It is a very short and quick event. It will NOT do it in park/neutral.

well considering that I have replaced pretty much every filter and sensor there is on my car, the only thing left is my coil packs and injectors....I won't bother with the injectors cause those are being replaced with 370's soon when I S/C....but the coil packs I definitely want to replace and see what they do! if that doesn't fix it, then I will do a compression test...

Nissan went with cheaper manufactured coils to save money on cost of production per model. that's why so many owners of 99's had to replace their coils after 75K+. after replacing the bad 99 Hanshin coils, nobody had any problems. the only reason i can think of coils going bad so quickly is a problem with the wiring harness or the car's electrical system.

You can test out each individual coil with a multimeter, there is a guide in the haynes manual on page 5-7. each of the coils should have similar resisance except the bad one. I had two bad coils, one which had a very loose and had left more residue on the old plugs (when i changed them 8K miles before) so i replaced all 6 coils in case any others went, and my car became very smooth under idling and linear on acceleration and pulls very strong.
BTW i got my coils from Courtesy Nissan (972-644-3942) they offer a big discount for maxima.org members and each coil came out to be about $57 bucks (front and rear are different)

This is PRECISELY what I experienced. Still do. Not as bad as in the past though. It's very random. I took my car to Midas and the Stealership and both places said they're fine. The Stealership said it could be a bad AAC-something or other. Some guys here on the org suggested it could be a bad fuel filter. I'm just saying that it might not be the coils. I'm waiting until the "hiccups" become really noticeable. Midas quoted be about ~$265 to change them, so we'll see.

But you didn't replace all 6 when you had the problem the first time, did you? If you only replaced the problematic coil at the time, it isn't surprising that you're having the problem again with another coil. Did you just replace the problematic one or all 6 last time?

davet it is MOST LIKELY the coil packs... that is exactly what happenned to my 99, it ran like crap, but when i put it in neutral or park it was fine... when i replaced the coil packs, it started running awesome again....

well lets try getting in touch with some of the nissan dealer guys on here and see what we can do. Its a know problem on the 99's and well it can't hurt to replace them on any car.
