clutch issues
Hey, just bought a '96 5-speed, 137K on original clutch a few weeks ago. Everything was great until this afternoon. Could hardly get it into gear, it was as if the point of engagement was lower than the floorboard would allow. Finally got it into 2nd and drove to my destination in that gear. Upon leaving, couldn't get it into ANY gear. Plan on having the dealer tow tomorrow. Just wondering if anyone has any ideas, is this probably a bad clutch? I had one go on a previous maxima and it was much slower, it started slipping, etc. for a couple weeks. This one was fine and then BAM, nothing. Seems like maybe a cable got loose or something. Just wanted some opinions before the dealer tells me my tranny's shot or something ridiculous. Thanks!
I am having the same proplems right now bro, Im trying to figure out why. I just put a new clutch in mine about 4 months ago, it think it might be a slave cylinder problem, maybe as simple as a bleeding problem caused by an overflow or leak, or maybe its the whole hydraulic mechanism inside, Ill keep you posted....
if its all of a sudden like that then its prolly the little bracket on the back of the pedal assembly. There is a "I_I" shaped bracket that bolts to the back of the pedal. Its is attached to the master cylinder rod assembly (which obvioulsy is what compresses teh fluid in the MC). After time they can break, either one side or both. If one side breaks typically the engagement point will be WAY to low, or you may not even be able to get it into gear without grinding badly. This is because when one side breaks; depressing/disengaging the clutch takes a lot more movement to actually get the cylinder rod assembly as far into the MC as it normally goes if the bracket was ok. First check that, its simple to replace and only costs about $22 from the dealer. There is a little pin securing a little cylinder type deal that attached that bracket to the back of the pedal. Takes about 2 mins to replace.
If thats ok, then I would assume complete loss of pressure somehow (line, leak...etc) which is very unlikely.
99% sure the TOB wouldn't cause that, neither would the pilot or any other "bearing". Its got to be somethign mechanical and its doubtful that it has to do with teh shoft fork/TOB. So just check the pedal assembly, cause cluthes dont just "go out" like that.

Sounds like low pressure to me. Try bleeding the line first. Had the same problem in the wifey's CRV and that was the problem. But may be just as well to replace the clutch henceforth the age of the car and miles on it.
I just had this happen to me three weeks ago and it was my clutch. Two pucks from my ACT HD 4 puck clutch was ripped off.
I also hoped that it would be the throw out bearing, but it was the clutch disk, Which also messed up my flywheel in the process.
The clutch never slipped. All of sudden it was hard to get into gear, and then impossible! (unless the car was off.).
I put in a new clutch and its smooth as butter.

Yeah if the clutch sticks to the floor, it's probably a line pressure problem. Check the clutch fluid resevoir for levels. Gotta bleed the line and refill.
Here's a link to a "how-to" with pics if you're not sure how to do it:

Keep an eye on the clutch resevoir after you get pressure back to normal. If you find it dropping at all, you'd might want to keep some tools and an extra bottle of brake fluid in the trunk so you won't be left stranded if it happens again. BTW - you might see some smoke coming from your engine compartment if the fluid is leaking onto some of the hotter parts of the engine and tranny - kind of embarrasing when you are at the stoplight and your engine comparment starts smoking so try and find the leak ASAP.
