2 Questions 1999 Max that has been sitting for 8 months.

I tried a start a friends 99 MAX that has been sitting for eight months while he was away on duty. His GF was driving it but not for the last 8 months. The car has a dead battery with a dead cell. When we jump the car it triggers the alarm and the remote in the battery is dead so we can't turn it off. Is there any other way to turn it off. We replace the battery in the remote but his GF told me she dropped it in the toilet once so I figure thats why its not working. Also once its started, and we remove the jumper cables every thing goes really dim and the car cuts off. Now the alternator was working fine for the time when his GF was driving the car. Can it go bad by just sitting?

things can dry out if they sit for too long ex; seals, gaskets... also get an oil change asap and use the gas thats in there as quick as possible

Battery may be too far gone to hold a charge. Take the battery to get tested at an autoparts place. Also as far as the alarm remote, it should dry out on its own and still be able to function properly. As far as the alarm itself, try disconnecting it away from the main battery terminal or using the valet mode to override it. I'd be willing to bet my paycheck that the battery is too far gone. Also like maxima99se said, use up all the gas in the car quickly and get the oil changed.

Shouldn't the alternator take over once it starts? She is taking the battery to autozone as I type.

also how does the valet mode work on this car?

You can unarm the alarm by closing the driverside door, locking it with the key, and then unlocking it with the key.

Yes. Once the car is started, the bulk of the electrical work should now be done with the alternator and the car should remain on even if the battery is shot provided you don't have anything ON. Heater, radio, lights, etc. everything should be OFF and the car should stay running if the battery is missing. If the car cuts off after it's started, the alternator is most likely dead. You can take IT out too if you like and get that tested at AutoZone as well. And while you're there get some oil and change it ASAP. Oil that has been sitting for that long goes bad and turns "gooey". And the gas too loses it's quality and sort of "breaks down". So throw in some premium too when you get a chance. Maxima's seem to be picky about their fuel and pretty soon the car might start spitting out CEL codes.

the key also has a computer chip in it . Once the batterey is drained completly down (this happened to me) it forgets the code for the chip on the key. nissan had to reprogram my key, its a fuel cut. This actually happened at the nissan dealer while getting some rearended repairs.

sounds like it could use an engine flush as well since there's some heavy-duty sludge buildup for the time its been sitting there

once the battery dies...that's it..get a fresh one and you should be fine...drive it around a bit to get the rust off the rotors too.
