Question for Auto Trans guys...

I've noticed that my car doesn't always downshift to first by itself all the time. If come to a complete stop and begin to accelerate again, the transmission starts in 1st and works perfectly. But if I don't come to a complete stop and try to accelerate again (moderately, not getting on it all that hard) it starts in 2nd gear. The Tach will hold at about 2200 RPMS while the car accelerates to 30 or so. If I get on it hard, it will downshift to 1st.

Is this normal? I'm concerned that this behavior is beating up the torque converter. The car has absolutly no problems shifting up through the 4 gears and locking up the torque converter in OD. I have 195,000 miles on the original transmission and I need her to get me through another 3 years of college...

Any thoughts?

That's not a bug, it's a "feature."

I believe I read somewhere (a while ago) that it has to do with fuel efficiency and ride quality - if you get slow enough, it will eventually downshift into 1 - but if you roll through a stop sign/light/whatever, you will most likely stay in 2 and only downshift if you apply moderate throttle.
