What piece is missing from this VQ? *pix*

I have a 1997 I30.... this part is attached to the air intake:

My mom just bought a 1996 I30 and it is missing the part, but the car runs perfect, here is a pic:

... Was this part added for 1997 or is she missing something off the '96?

I believe the sensor detects the total amount of nitrogen oxide. Don't quote me on that.

absolute pressure sensor i believe (if damaged u get code 08 03). I dont think it hurts performance but car looks at it for some special testing. Whatever code 08 03 gives u, thats the sensor, i know that for sure cause i replaced that and code went away.

I think you mean the MAP/BARO - but I don't think the particular part here is the MAP - it is marked on my car as a boost sensor. The MAP sensor is along the intake path.

Exactly as said before, it measures atmospheric pressure. The car runs perfectly normal with or with out it. I have been driving my car for the past 3 weeks without this boost sensor in the car. My brother accidently broke the little nipple sticking out of it so I just took it out. I will glue it back together sometime and put it back in.

i read somewhere (the intake install in Shop Talk) that b/c the stock airbox has the intake that is aimed forward when at high speeds air is forced into the intake and it measures that increase in preasure.
