how DO you know if your tranny is dying?

I know that if your (auto)tranny starts to slip, it might be a sign.
Slipping is what? Is it when you step on the gas but the car doesn't go?

I read someone talk about not locking up.. What's that?
Does that mean torque braking doesn't work?

I would just like some methods to see and check whether or not my tranny is dying.

Slipping is recognizable by engine speed not matching road speed in a certain gear. If its hard to you to determine if its slipping, bring it to an experience automatic transmission shop and have them try to diagnose it. The majority of them do that test for free.

i think when you step on the gas or floor it and the rpm are going higher but you car is not going faster then all the sudden it goes or snap your neck back then its slipping... right?

that's sounds like automatic downshifting.

OMG!!! Damn you have some bad luck with your car man!

As for the downshifting... our cars SUCK at downshifting. Maybe you should drive another auto max and compare it to see. When I first got mine, I thought the transmission was slipping when I would slow down and try to speed up. It wouldnt catch into gear quick enough. But its perfecty normal

when my tranny began to slip going into first, when i was at a stop and got on teh gas my rpm would climb but my car would not move forward the when the car reached about 1200 rpm it would jerk into gear and begin moving.

when jermeysride2000 tranny started slipping going into 3rd, his car would try to upshift into third but the rpm would climb with no forward movement until it slipped into gear. he was able to diagnose his early and got a new vb to fix the problem(very lucky for him)

I CANT STRESS THIS ENOUGH YOU HAVE TO FIX THIS NOW BEFORE IT GETS WORSE, do as someone said and get it to a tranny specialist and save your money case this is going to cost you no matter what.
