CEL Advice (0705) (0903)
Stickies indicated that I'm throwing 0705 (Evaporative Emission Control System) and 0903 (Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Canister Vent Control Valve or its associated electric circuit.)
Has anyone had this code corrected it? i want to try to take care of it first before taking it to the shop. What should I be looking for in order to recify the problem?

The vent valve & canister is located behind the left rear wheel and is subject to road debri, which usually renders it clogged. You can take the valve out, clean it up with some WD-40, get it all cleaned out and working then reinstall it.
That usually solves the problem.

I also had that problem. A year ago I removed the valve ( 4 bolts) and wiggled the valve out. I tried fixing the original, but couldn't really get it fully loose. Re installed it had the CEL 2 days later. Ordered the new part, $35 or so, and haven't had a problem since. I didn't notice any adverse effects other than having to see the CEL inside, maybe decresed mileage, but not drastic. It's an easy fix. I had moisture in mine that rusted the valve open.
Hey man guess wat i got the same problem....i happeded when i put injector cleaner in the tank..........i started with 0705 first then 0705/0903 so i did was drive in a big puddle of water on the leftside rear last night ( did this because it can remove dirt) and then today i got the code 0505 which i presume it mean a problem has been fixed and i was getting bad milage for my gas..i just recently did a post name 0505 read i let me know how u fixed ur problem
I've had 0903 for almost 2 years now had 3 shops including Nissan look at it. I've had a whole new evap system put in and also a smoke test done to see if there were leaks, nothing! Then they said my ecu is causing a false code..Had that replaced...Code came back....So if anyone has had the same or similar problem where they cant get rid of the code and then finally found the problem, please!!!! let me know!!!!!!!
On my '98 I had 07 04 and 02 15 codes which related to the EVAP system. If you reset the ECU the CEL may not come back on for up to a week but trust me it will come back. I have heard stories of people trying to diagnose and fix their own EVAP problems just to have the CEL come back on later.
I took mine to the dealer and found out it needed a EVAP system vent control valve. Parts and labor at the stealership was only 128.00. I would recommend taking it to a dealer for EVAP problems if you want it fixed for good. Also, this part is known to go out on our maxes. If you look up a 4th gen maxima on the MSN auto page it states that it is a common failure on our cars.

Yeah but I didnt do the evap system myself, I went to Nissan and they are the ones who did the smoke test, and replaced the valve, canister and ect and the light still came back on. Nissan could not figure out why its still on because they said they checked every possible thing to trigger the code for the evap.
well im pulling these codes now and google searched the org and lead me to this thread. I went behind the left wheel well and there are 3 parts underneath, the white piece with the one hose going down into it and then the 2 hoses going into the huge box.(what is that box anyways?) also the canister which has the foam filter inside it. I looked at all 3 of them the box you cant take apart, the 2 other pieces werent dirty at all. I cleaned the electrical connections put it together reset the ecu and bam next day same code is back. So any ideas? The only part I could see not working would be either the huge box or the white circular piece. Am I even looking at the right stuff to diagnose this problem? Thanks
i have the same codes, but my vcv couldnt come out, the bolts just kept rotating..the vcv is the one with two bolts, one tube and one connector (i think!) my bolts wouldnt come out so i just left it alone, i've read that 0705 does not affect performance as it is just a self-diagnosis, but dont know bout the 0903!! i hate that orange light in my dash!
and this all popped up a few minutes after i changed my o2 sensor!!

bump, any other people with any pointers. I have to get my car inspected and it wont pass if the light is on and the problem being emissions related dosnt help either.
Is the vcv part of the box underneath behind the wheel well. I tried unscrewing those too and they would just spin and not budge.

The reason why the small bolts that attach the VCV to the canister are spinning is because the threaded metal sleeves that the bolts screw into are molded into the plastic canister, and now after many years the plastic area around the metal sleeves is broken or whatever and so the metal sleeve is spinning with the bolt as you try to unscrew it. I hope this makes sense.
How do I know this? I know this because I recently experienced the same problem. Fortunately, I was in the process of replacing my old canister, and all I was worried about was getting the old VCV off to attach to my new canister. One of the bolts that attach the VCV came off pretty easily, but the other one just spun in place. So, I took a hand saw, hacked open the old canister, and discovered the problem as descibed above. After cutting away enough of the plastic that surrounded the metal sleeve inside the canister, I used channel locks to hold the sleeve in place (pliers weren't strong enough), and that allowed me to unscrew the the bolt.
Unfortunately, I really can't see how someone can take off these "stripped" bolts without opening up the charcoal canister.

Well, if you don't wanna chop up the canister, I guess you can find someway to cut the troublesome bolt at the spot in between where the VCV and canister meet. Then you can easily unscrew out the top half of the bolt. BUT then again, the bottom half of the bolt will still be screwed into the metal sleeve in the canister. =P
