Exactly how bad is Maaco???

I know everyone hates Maaco and everything but exactly how bad are their paint jobs because I probably will only have my Max for another year and I dont wanna spend 1500 to paint both bumpers, hood, trunk, and right fender in pearl white and plus it probably wont even match. I just wanted something quick to have my car all one color like a simple black or something. So are there any satisfied Maaco customers to say somethin good?

i personally think the more you pay at maaco the better the job. just make sure you get a coulple of clear coats so your car paint doesnt crack or chip fast or easily

I had maaco do my 91. As long as you do some prep work, removing moulding and the lights, and the wiper nozzles, antenna, etc... it comes out great.

Finish doesnt last that long though. I had the Supreme paint job and the hood and roof began to fade after 3 years.

Not bad for $250 though

I've never had a car painted by Maaco, but I have seen some of their work. Paint fading after one year, chips, orange peel, tons of overspray...

The phrase "you get what you pay for" comes to mind.

As long as you dont expect to much, you should be fine. Just remember if you want a quality paint job go somewhere else. If its a time being kinda thing, go for it.

I had my Jeep painted there and I did all of the prep work and it actually looked good. There was a little bit of overspray on the shocks but that was basically it. I am actually thinking about going again with my Max when I get the Stillen kit but I'll be doing all of the prep work again and getting more clear and I might tape everything too so there is no overspray.

wasn't there a thread posted about Maaco paint jobs before?

if you plan on selling the car, then go ahead w/ Maaco. But if you're looking for a quality paint job, look somewhere else

Yeah if I were you go somewhere else if you plan to keep the car. I use to have a 1990 300zx...took it to macco to have a front fascia painted. I ended up hauling my two toned car out of the shop pissed off. The paint was really light compared to stock paint. Let's just say that I would never do business with them ever again.

My brother had his Accord's bottom side moldings painted by Maaco also. All I can say is....TERRIBLE! There were oversprays everywhere...dripped all over the place, and worst of all, the color didn't even come close to the factory color. I told my brother to take it back for them to redo it. They spent 2 days doing it again. They got rid of the oversprays and drips but the 2-tone color was still there. The store manager said that's the best they can do; they used their most expensive paint available. Now, it's been almost 2 years and the paint is peeling off and fading like crazy. What a waste of $375. Maaco isn't the place to go if you're looking for a quality job.

You get what you pay for and btw if you think 1500 is alot for a paint job then you should see how much I have been quoted.. 2,000 to 2500 bucks in paint. I would love a good painter to paint my **** for 1500

I knew a guy who had a impala painted there and it was horriable drip marks.. How the hell do you paint someones car and give it back to them with drip marks?

Another thing to keep in mind is that Maaco's are independently owned and operated. Thus there will be a wide varity of quality. Some shops won't even do their cheapo paint jobs because they know they won't come out all that well.

I recommend seeing some of thier work (and thier facilities) first. See if they are doing work on any high end cars. Some shops are terrible, while others can be quite good.

Good luck.

the lower end maaco paintjobs have the worse outcomes ever. i knew a guy who had his car painted by maaco, then 6 months later went back to get resprayed, they qouted him over $1000 to remove the old paint alone.

it seems like the only way you'll get a decent paint job from maaco...is if you do all the prep work yourself first. I guess that's not bad considering you're getting a 250 dollar paint job. But since you're doing most of the work..why not save half that 250 by buying a bunch of spray cans and doing it yourself? You already preped the damn thing. You think maaco will spray your car any better than you can with a bag full of spray cans?

For the people who said they were suprised how good their jobs came out compared to the amount you paid, how much did you pay and which package should I be picking if I want an acceptable job?

I considered going to Maaco to get it done but ended up going some place else. Like someone said earlier each Maaco is independently owned and operated and it all depends on how careful you follow them when they do the work. Call it overkill, but I went to the place I had my car painted at everyday to make sure all went well with it. They had to do some re-work and they still have some work to do now cause a rock chipped the paint on my hood and I want it to get done prior to the Nissan meet next week. They put about 2.5 to 3 coats of clearcoat on my car and it still needs to be wet-sanded but it looks hella better than what it did. I paid $1200 to get my car repainted and they had to take most of the car down to bare metal to do because I had lacquer checking on the hood, roof, and sides of the car. Now she is a one of a kind and the only Maxima in San Diego with that color (metallic black) with silver flakes. Just follow up with them and you should be okay.

the worst paint job i seen in my life.
chipping, peeling, org. peel effect, waxy..

just go to macco around closing time and see customers picking up their cars
and see all the complainting and ugly body work and paint jobs.

You can't say never go there because like people said they are independantly owned so they are all different. To whoever asked about the people who went and liked it for what they paid well I did it and I went during the half off deal and paid like $400 I had the Jeep for like 6 months after that and no peeling or anything and it was mainly during the summer and I'd definitly go back to this specific one only because of the cars I've seen go in and out and that I know they won't screw me. Besides if they screw up thats what the warranties are for.

The best advice I can give you: DO YOUR HOMEWORK

Shop around, ask to see cars that the shop has painted ... in person ... not just pictures. You really will get what you ask for; a $250 paint job is a $250 paint job, no matter where you get it (Maaco or Chip Foose), period.

Some body shops around here are worse than Maaco and charge 5 times as much. Again, do your homework. Take the time to research who is doing what and for how much.

Then, you'll need to figure out how much quality you can get within your budget.

Don't slam a chain of body shops because of what a few people might say (especially if they haven't personally seen the work of the shop near you). Judge that for yourself, you might be suprised.

After all, the first thing people are going to notice about your car is how it looks - and paint is the most important part. Who cares if you're "rollin' on dubs" if you have an f'ed up paint job or primered body kit?

theres a lot of things to consider when yous considering macco. one main thing is the a paint job is really only is good as the prep work. everyone is pointing the finger at macco's paint job but if the job is not prepped properly it doesnt matter who's painting it, even the best painter's paint job can flake or fade after time if the surface being painted was not properly prepped. other things to consider is how old your car is, how many miles, how long you plan on keeping it. you mentioned getting rid of your car within the next yr, the $500 you may save now may make your car worth less or harder to sell due to crapppy paint work. best thing to keep in mind with paint work is you get what u pay for

I had my 1991 S10 painted at macco for $250 and I was impressed with what what I got for the price I paid. There was some overspray spots but it looked much better then before the paintjob. I got this done 5 years ago and now there are some rust spots, but that was beacuse I had them before the paint job and just told them to paint over it. No fadeing which is why it needed painting 5 years ago. So other then the overspray it was pretty good. Although I wouldn't take my 97 max there and I wouldn't suggest you take yours there either.

You gotta understand what it is they actually do. That $250 special isn't even considered a real paint job. All they do is put a few coats over the existing paint. They don't sand, prime, or prep the surface at all. So all you get is a sprayover basically. A real paint job entails sanding down the old paint, priming over it, then applying the new paint and clearcoat, then buffing and polishing it. That is why it is so expensive. I'm sure Maaco can do a real paint job, but not for $250.
