Wasted Guy + Rain = Wreck!

This happened about two hours ago. I jump off I-75 at my exit, get up to the light, and wait to turn right when traffic clears. Suddenly I hear tires squealing, but don't know where they're coming from bcz the light is in the process of changing (so it could have been from any side). But no, it was coming from behind. I have a Kia Optima ram me, which was slammed into by an old Chevy Astro. The Kia was a rental, so hopefully this will go smoothly with Hertz. The guy in the Astro was toasted - I don't know what he got doped up on, but he was fcuked up. He jumps out of the van with no shoes on (only socks), and as he's stepping on pieces of his grille and headlights asks "Did I hit your car, dude?" I couldn't hold in the laughter. He was oblivious to reality. He actually wanted us to drive to the LIQUOR STORE around the corner bcz his dad was there!! I almost told him not to make it TOO obvious that he was wasted. He didn't want us to call the cops bcz he had no license or anything "on him" - but having a rental car involved made the cops a must. His only excuse offered was "it's slippery as ****, man." Um, yea... it gets like that when it rains.....

The cop immediately knew he had an arrest on his hands, so he dealt with me and the Kia first. As I drove away, I could hear the cop saying, "So you don't have your license with you? But you do have a valid license? And you don't have any registration for this vehicle?" This idiot wasn't only intoxicated beyond driving capacity, but his ******* paperwork isn't even in order. Thank god the Hertz Kia hit me and not him.

The beauty of this is that all of the damage on my car before this wreck (aside from little stuff like rock chips up front) was on the rear bumper!! I accidentally scraped the corner months ago, and it's been an eyesore I can't wait to get rid of. I also bought the car with a few knicks and contact marks on the rear bumper, so hopefully this will work out perfectly. The wreck added more scratches to the rear bumper, and also bent my (stock) tailpipe, but that's it. No fender damage, and my red/clears weren't harmed.

This could be that perfect wreck that fixes what needed to be fixed anyway. At most it will cost me a $250 deductible, and that's pretty likely - Kentucky has this insane "no-fault" clause... its a decent idea on paper, but the real world application is all shady: most wrecks kinda get shrugged off and no blame is assessed for one reason or another, meaning my insurance only worries about my Max, Hertz only worries about the Kia, etc.

Lil stiff in the neck, though.......

The Max is all wet and dirty, so I'll post pics when I clean it up and the damage is more visible.

I don't see why you should have to pay anything, I guess I don't understand this no-fault stuff. Also I would have made it obvious to the cop that he was messed up, that makes it easier for you to collect, who cares if he gets locked up, he could have hurt or killed someone. Gotta get these guys and street racers off the road...

that is crazy. GLad you are alright, and hope your neck isnt hurt.

I agree with 98SterlingMax that who cares what happens to him, he was drunk and without his information, he could have killed some one or cause a large pile up on the high way, let him catch the full fury he has cause, glad to hear that this works our well for you, hopefully with that bent tail pipe, maybe it bent the B-pipe some and you can get a nice Cat-back, or would they try to get you a new stock one?

either way look forward to pics and be safe.

Well lets hope you are alright. Tomorrow or the next day you might not be. First off , take your car to nissan. How much visible damage is done? I got rearended by a tahoe accelerating at 25mph=$4700 on 8/5/2003. I can barely walk with my head up and Im in constant pain! Yes I had back surgery when I was 5 and have some screws in my spine but I still have pain all day every day ever since that lady hit me. ( not being able to lift head up is from picking up case of water at walmart on sunday) You might want to get a lawyer just in case, I am still going through the legal steps. It sux big time, the worst part is I didnt have a scratch on my car so I didnt gain anything positive. my car looks good thanks to going to nissan, neck and back is fcukd for life. good luck to you anyway

Where at on I-75? I live in Erlanger, sounds like you had this accident in Florence or something.

Im sorry to hear about the accident, but at least your car will get fixed, you might get some extra spendin' money out of it too

I am thinking I need full coverage on my max ... they seem to pay really good when you get into a fender bender.

Glad to hear your ok though. Too bad about that drunk facker.

its ppl. like the guy in the Astro van who either put other ppl's lives in danger or even take a life when they're too drunk/high to drive ... glad to hear you're ok, that's the important thing

Felix and Colossus - this happened at the end of the southbound exit ramp at Buttermilk Pike (in Crescent Springs).

The little sting in my neck is virtually gone today, so I'm not expecting any long term injuries here. The guy in the Astro hit the Kia at 25 - 35mph -- he slammed on the brakes and skidded about 20 feet before making contact -- and the Kia hit me with the residual energy.

I don't think the exhaust is messed up. It actually looks like the tip that covers the tailpipe is the only thing bent.

Pics in 30 mins.....

It was a white Kia, and this is what it left on the bumper. This is AFTER I've wiped off dirt and rain residue.....

The muffler damage, as you can see, is pretty minor.

Damage that needs to be fixed anyway....

The damage in these two pics were there when I bought the car....

Sorry I didn't clean this whole area.

All of Hertz's claims in Cincinnati are handled by an office in Pittsburgh. Considering the police report probably won't be ready until Monday, I just have to sit tight for now.

Yep - both rear quarter panels are a-ok. They put a pretty solid bumper on the Max, if I say so myself....

That looks similar to what my brother did to the rear bumper, but on the driver side

damage doesn't seem all that bad .. if it wasn't for your Max, it could've been worse

After driving the car about 25 miles today (to and from class) I've noticed that my exhaust is a bit louder. It's not from the muffler damage, because the noise comes from under the car. It actually makes it sound a bit meaner without sounding like a busted up exhaust. I'm assuming that the collision rattled the pipes enough to either a) create a small gap somewhere, or b) make a rusted area spring a leak. I'll be sure to push that issue when getting my estimate.....
