ECU Code 10-01

Hi all,

Somewhat new here but have been lurking around for a little while.

I have a question - my MIL light came on a couple of days ago. I ran the self-diagnostic on it and it came back with two codes, 03-04 (knock sensor) and 10-01 (Front Left Htd 02 sensor heater). I know what the knock sensor is and how to replace it, but am a little unsure of the second one.

Anyone deal with this code before? Is this the most forward O2 sensor (that I think is called left)? If it is, I would assume that this would be the "Upstream" O2 sensor as described in the FAQ (http://forums.maxima.org/showpost.ph...2&postcount=24). Can someone tell me how difficult it is?

Any further clarification would be helpful.

Thanks in advance.

The left bank is on the back of the motor. Try changing the o2 sensor first because the knock sensor code probably set because of the bad o2. If the knock code comes back after you replace the 02 than replace it too.

I just had both codes come up on me a few weeks ago. I replaced both 02 sensors at the same time. Its not worth changing one when the other one is going to crap out sooner or later. After I changed the 02 sensors the knock sensor code came back to life so I have to change that this weekend if all goes well.

Ant - How hard is it to change both O2 sensors? Is one harder to get to than the other?

T40e - Yes, I normally run 87 because all of the driving I do is highway. I used to use the good stuff but tried 87 and didn't notice much of a difference. Will using a lower octane ruin O2 sensors? I was under the impression that lower octane was fine to use in the Max, you'll just lose some power.

Sounds like a Thanksgiving project is coming up...

Im not too sure but i think in the Nissan manual, it strongly recommends nothing nothing lower 91 octane due to pinging or knocking. If not, I might have read it somewhere else. But the knock sensor is there because Nissan doesnt deal well low performance fuel. High performance gas burns better, cleaner, and more efficient. The little 3.0 engine produces alot of power which inturns produces Alot of heat. Heat can cause premature detonation 'pinging' from low grade fuel.
I dont have my copy of the manual on me so Im kinda guessing from memory. If Im wrong, forget what I said but keep it in mind.

Using lower octane will not mees up your O2 sensors.

Very easy. Just follow the harness from the bottom of the sensor up. If not use a Haynes manual it'll tell you where the plugs are at. The hardest part is just getting to the O2 sensor under the car.
