When I was installing my spark plugs I forgot to connect one of the connectors and the same thing you're describing happened (rough idle, bad accel, etc.), check under the hood to see if something came loose or something...

Oh yeah and do some ECU diagnosis to find out exactly what it was

stop driving the car - blinking check engine light means there is serious problem with your car( major missfire etc). Pull the codes and post what did you get.

Nick.

there is a screw! Bend your *** over and crawl under the dash. turn the ignition on then turn the screw all the way left and back to the right( im pretty sure) and watch the cel flash and count them...... use small screw driver

If it's blinking, nick's right: there's misfire. And your 3way catalytic converter's being damaged. The car should be running in fail-safe mode now. Get it checked out soon.

The screw is hard to see on 99's, i had problems doing mine at first, now i can check and clear in 5 mins. a very narrow thin flathead works the best

OMFG I JUST HAD THE BEST IDEA EVER!!! How's about getting the code pulled? What a novel idea! Go to autozone and have them pull the damn code, if you can't get the screwdriver trick to work. Goodluck

I've seen those symptons a couple times over the last month. The light flashes after a few major misses/stuttering & flapping/knocking noise under heavy acceleration, then it goes off by the time I get to a stop and check the codes -- I never get ANY codes. The coils test OK via ohmeter (for what that's worth) and ***the knock sensor tests as Open***. Wierd, yet the engine works perfect and very strong some of the time. Most of the time though, it just accelerates unsmoothly under light throttle, and perfectly some times. All very strange. Any ideas?

But Jay, try to pull a code before you freak out. Hopefully, you'll get luckier with codes than I have been.

Look up p0300, p0301, p0302, p0303, p0304, p0305, p0306
Engine misfire (p0300), and the last number tells you which cylinder is screwing up.
from my fsm:
On board diagnosis logic
if misfire occurs, the engine speed will flucturate. if the fluctuation is dectected by the crankshaft position sensor, the misfire is diagnosed
1. one trip detect logic (3 way catalyst damage
when misfire is detected which will overheat and damage the 3way catalyst, the MIL will start blinking; even during the first trip. in this condition ecm monitors the misfire every 200 rpm
if misfire freq dec to a level that will not damage the 3 way catalyst, the mil will change from blinking to lighting up
after the 1st trip detect, the mil will light up from engine starting. if a misfire is detected that will cause 3 way catalys damage, the mil will start blinking
2. two trip detection logic (exhaust quality deterioration)
when a misfire that will not damage the 3way catalyst (but will affect exhaust emission) occurs, the mil will light up based on the 2nd consecutive trip detection logic. in this condition the ecm monitors the misfire for each 1000 rpm

Ditto what jaykid just said... the cel blinks only at the moment of worst misfiring/hesitation/noisemaking, but then it goes off... and there are no codes to be found afterwards. And mine only runs like crap intermittently and perfectly at other times.

Try this:
1) Start engine and warm it up to normal operating temp
2) Turn ignition switch "Off" and wait at least 10 sec
3) Start engine again and drive at 1500 - 3000 rpm at least 3 minutes
Hold accelerator pedal as steady as possible during driving
4) Turn ignition switch "Off", wait at least 10 sec
5) Check for codes (diagnostic test mode II)

The post above and this post contain info from the Nissan Factory Service Manual. Check the following items in listed order, according to FSM.

A) EGR function
B) Power Balance (disconnect each injector one at a time; does it produce a momentary engine speed drop?)
C) Injectors (does it make noise at idle?)
D) Check ignition spark (disconnect coil from rocker cover, connect known good spark to coil, place end of spark on ground, crank engine, check for spark)
E) Spark plugs
F) Fuel pressure
G) Compression pressure
H) Ignition timing
I) Front heated O2 sensor
J) Mass Air Flow sensor (ecm pin 54 and ground should be 1.0-1.7v @ idle, 1.5-2.1v @ 2500rpm)
