BOSE Headunit Sucks

So it stops working after 2 minutes of play. What's wrong with it and how can I fix it? Is there even a way? It will play like a couple minutes and jus freeze... I'm mad because a new headunit cost too much and I don't have time to install a new one.. so if anyone can help it would be cool!

lol, if bose had a recall their credibility as a "premium audio supplier" would be destroyed...finally. they need to give clarion their credit for actually making all of the equipment, and people need to start bugging them about our ****+y stereos. just my $.02

That's exactly what mine does, or it will also spin the cd around a few times and then turn off. Then I have to push the power and eject buttons a million times for the cd finally to eject. It sucks big time. I've punched it before because I got so mad. Not that it helped but I felt better.

I punch my bose many many times, it helps me get the strees out .... (when I say many times I really mean it, many punches at least 3 time a day)
I broke 3 buttons already, and solder them back...
but I know what the problem with mine is, the display is not making good contact with the connectors...

Go aftermarket. You won't regret it. My BOSE died and I picked up a nice HU with MP3 playback.

I filled the space underneath the headunit with a little CD storage tray (the new HU will only take up one "slot" whereas the old one took up two).

So, now I can fit 6 slim-line CD cases in that little box. That's 70+ hours of music! Or the equivalent of 60 regular CDs sitting right in my dash!

It makes me happy...

I use to have aftermarket headunit in place of the BOSE. I used the special harness and adaptors to make it all work with the BOSE speakers. Let me tell you that the sound quality isn't remotely as good as using the BOSE headunit. It's not even close.

Hmm, I don't have problem with the HU other than the CD player. I just get a CD changer and put it in my trunk. It only skips when I really hit a huge pothole. I'm happy for now.

P.S. Anyone know a place to store a 6CD changer?

I got the "BOSE BLOWS Blues" too. I"m on the 2nd HU now. Works ok, but had one that would not play or eject. I think the last CD it had is STILL in there. And the current HU had a problem ejecting each time I start the car, stopped that with a big blast of air in there. Man.

i have to replace mine soon too, the tape deck took a cr@p on me so everytime i start my car i hear it trying to eject a tape when there isnt even a tape in there and there hasnt been one in there in a loong time. o'well until it stops completly working ill probably just deal with that bose p.o.s. or should i say clarion p.o.s.

It is true that you lose the "fine tuning circuitry" when you replace the BOSE headunit. Supposedly this circuitry was designed to optimize sound quality within our particular car.

HOWEVER, most people who have made the switch have been unable to discertain any loss of sound quality. It may indeed affect sound quality a little, but you'd probably have to line two cars up side-to-side (one with BOSE one with Aftermarket) and listen to the same soundtrack to be able to tell the difference!

The only way I could see a big drop in sound quality would be if you used a really shiitty converter box between the headunit and the speakers. The better ones do an excellent job (at least the one in my car does, as does another that I've heard).

Just my two cents.

That looks like a really nice converter. With my aftermarket HD and BOSE speakers, the volume was fine, but the sound quality just didn't sound near as rich and full. It's a pretty big difference and I noticed it immediately. My aftermarket headunit was a nice, clean, and simple Nacakmichi unit (which is now for sale $120, sells for $225).

Holy Crap that's one expensive converter! You don't need to spend $150. I forget the model that I bought (sorry), but you can get some reasonable quality ones for around $60. You can get some good advice from the audiophiles in the stereo forum or other car stereo forums online.

You want low noise, and especially want to be able to fully adjust the gain on each speaker. If you do the install yourself, have someone with a good ear for stereos help you adjust the speakers for the best sound balance. Essentially YOU do the adjusting that the special factory wiring once did on the BOSE unit. A good car stereo place can also get your sound system sounding the way it should.

For a converter go with the NIS-OEM2. There is a thread in the stickies on were to get this special harness.

You guys aren't the only ones that have to beat the crap out of your BOSE hu. The volume only goes up or down after it has warmed up and the display doesn't work anymore. I can't the radio station nor the cd i'm playing. I've gotten so mad at my BOSE that I busted my hand on the radio. The radio was finally working correctly for a couple of minutes but my hand didn't after the blow. My hand was pulsing after it but I didn't break anything...yet.

I HATE MY BOSE UNIT.

FROM THE STICKIES (I can't promise that this is the best one, but I believe it's the model that I have. It's been a while since I got the new headunit...):

Adding Aftermarket CD Player to Bose 95-2003:

There is another adapter, made by PAC, which will allow you to use an Aftermarket Head Unit with the Bose Speakers/Amp(s).

It should apply to 95-2003 models with the Bose system. It is called the ROEM-NIS2.

Currently the best price is $59.95 shipped, available here:

Here's another model (much like the one above, I can't verify how well it works. This is definitely NOT the model that I used.):

In either case, you shouldn't be spending $150 on one of these!

Another model from Crutchfield. No personal experience with this one though.

Here's a great explanation from a guy who used this exact adapter to swap the BOSE from his J30.
