What is up with this horrible GAS mileage??? what u guys gettin?
Since gas prices have gone way up, I'm trying to see how good I can get my city mileage and the results are impressive. This assumes the car is in good working shape, tires inflated, etc. The last tank I averaged 31.28 MPG. Driving technique involved very slow starts, anticipating red lights, coasting down long hills (tranny in neutral), and keeping my speed to 60 mph or less. Not as much fun as driving normal but it's good to know that your MPG can increase considerably by using the gas and brakes as little as possible!
By the way, I drive a manual 1998 maxima and I'm not sure which model it is. It has approx 120,000 on it.

Here's what i got, 98 gxe, 73k, 17 konig imagines with 235/45 R17s rims... changed my spark plugs about a month ago, new air filter... haven't changed out fuel filter yet, but going to soon...
Here's the thing, i'm only gettin about 300 miles to the tank.... from what i remember our tanks are about 14-16 gallons... that equates to roughly 20mpg... dat sucks for highway... doesn't it???

are my wheels causing bad gas mileage? what yall think?

I have custom Y-pipe Apexi cold air intake +
225/50/16 Goodyear F1 +
I use 5w50 Xado oil that has revitalizator
check http://www.xadoshop.com/faq.html
I get a little over 400 miles to a tank. I drive about 40 miles roundtrip to class five days/week, and fill up every other week. It averages out to 24 mpg. Right after I top off I drive aggressively (90-100 mph on the freeway and quick acceleration at stop signs), until I have about 3/4 tank left and realize that I don't want to spend another 45 bucks to fill up again anytime soon. Then I only drive 65-85, but stay more or less around 70.
I get 13-14 mpg 100% city driving (Brooklyn ,NY). I don't drive hard , never go over 2500 rpm.
The following is the maintenance I had done :
spark plugs
fuel filter
air filter
knock sensor
front O2 sensors
oil and filter
coolant
PCV
Cleaned throttle body
I feel improvement in performance but the gas mileage remained almost the same.
Someone told me that replacing the coolant temperature sensor helps, I'm gonna replace it this week.

Bump from the dead, city and highway makes a HUGE difference...
My daily driving cycle is weird; distance-wise I do about 40% city and 60% highway, but time-wise I do about 75% city and 25% highway... in any case, on average I do about 18MPG....
Sometimes for work I have to drive far, and when I get more highway mileage it creeps up to about 20-22MPG...
Best tank I've got so far on my regular cycle was 23MPG... pretty significant, a 25% change? But in NYC you kind of have to drive aggressively (not really I just HATE NYC TRAFFIC) or you get walked on and it takes forever to get anywhere. Plus I like how my intake sounds
In any case, oddly enough, this is not too far off from my '93 Accord, which got about 20MPG, all city driving though. I think my tire pressures may be off...

if you're like me..you sit just alittle longer in that nice a/c, heavy tinted windows w/ the Bose blasting..who wants to get out and deal w/ the REAL world, ya know? i'm in south fla and it's HOT outside, and the peep's are, well..like that off road maxima driver. HA HA!
I'm fanatical about keeping track of my mileage. I do it on every fill up. I just took a 330 mile trip and used up the remainder of the tank driving around town. I aired the tires up to 38 PSI before the trip. I just filled up and checked and I got 27.73 MPG. I think that is the best ever. Usually around town I get between 24.5 and 26.
I don't even get 300 miles per tank but I my Max appears to accelerate faster than another Maxima of the same year I drove. It also idles at 900 rpm instead of 650-750. When my friend who works at a Honda dealership saw this he said that my Maxima may be a factory freak lol. Maybe we should take our Maximas to the track to see if we can confirm it. When I take my foot off the brake my Maxima goes about 15 mph. o_O On the rare occassions that it idles a 750 it goes about 10 mph.(Any opinions on this is appreciated. I don't know a lot about cars, I'm not sure about the factory freak thing, something may actually be wrong with my car, but it runs like a dream.) I get about 17 mpg.
my last tank got me 440. About 2 months ago, I changed my brake pads and rotors, changed oil + filter and changed my fuel filter to the 300zx one. My mpg has slowly increased since then from about 20 to 27. not bad if i do say so myself.
matrix11229, i get the same cr@ppy mileage, but then my trips are short, and all city. I can get about 260 miles on a tank while accelerating very slowly (2,500 MAX) mostly close to 2,000 and coast when i can. The funny thing is that i get 220 doing 3,000 rpm and having at least one WOT session per tank.

1998 Max GXE 5spd, K&N Filter, Custom Flex-Back exhaust, No Cat, Borla Muff, recently replaced fuel filter, & cleaned fuel system, my car will only hold 16.5 gallons instead of 18.5....with 17" 2004 350Z wheels.
Shell V-Power = 385-395 per tank
Chevron Supreme = 350-360 per tank

I got 345 miles on 15.5 gallons, which gives me about 22mi/gal. At that pace, it puts range about 400 miles per tank, only mod is a weapon-r intake. I cleaned the throttle body a little bit when i put the intake on too, which seems to have helped with idling speed- about 550-600 rpms after a little driving.
City miles and autos tranny's don't mix. The max is rated at 21 mpg in the city with the auto. If you drive the auto hard, i would think the mileage is much worse on a auto in the city than the manual max. My 5 speed has a much lower gear so the car uses less gas getting up to speed than the auto. Thoughts??
1.) Extra weight
2.) Parasitic losses, mainly through the torque converter. It isn't as efficient as a solid connection, or in other words the clutch on a 5sp.
I bet the auto's get much better mileage on the highway. At 80-90 mph I barely have to press the gas pedal on my 5sp to hold that speed, yet I'm spooling at a ridiculous 3500RPM in 5th gear. This car needs a 6th or taller gear ratio in 5th badly.
Wow 400 miles to a tank, I usually get about 280-305, and as for a solution I honestly have no idea there are a ton of factors such as how hard you step on the gas when you are at a light and all that.
Oh but one thing that DID help me improve the MPT (Miles per tank) is that I cleaned the TB with a rag dipped in Seafoam, and also I had a few cans of Seafoam left, so I had like 3 cans just sitting there in front of me and I just took one look at it and said "what the heck" and pour over half a can in my oil, half of another can in the gas, and whatever is left through the brake booster plus 1/4 of the third can
I think I got seafoam fever that day
But the weirdest thing is that when I had 4 wheels in my car I had the highest miles on a tank I had ever gotten. And please don't ask why I had 4 wheels in my car and lugging it around its almost embarassing

I'd have to say, somewhere between 285-305 on the highway, @ about a constant 80 mph (when passing 85-95 [85-110 when frustrated]). City mileage is to unpredictable sometimes as low as 17 sometimes up to 21.5 idk, anyone think it's a problem, but I do usually drive like an a**hole ...

For our cars with the level of power we have, honestly I think the lower gears of the 5sp actually hurt gas mileage. I think the only reason the auto has worse mileage in the city is because of two factors:
1.) Extra weight
2.) Parasitic losses, mainly through the torque converter. It isn't as efficient as a solid connection, or in other words the clutch on a 5sp.

I have driven many 4th generation Maximas and I have noticed the same. manual is a little better in town, but on the highway it keep higher RPMs and the automatic comes way more efficient. I wanted manual Maxima before, but I do not anymore, at least not 4th generation.
I usualy get about 320 a tank if I drive like an *******, 430 if I baby it. One thing I don't get is I've only seen my low fuel light once in 2 1/2 years of owning the car. I fear running out of gas cause sometimes that needle is way down there yet still not light. Anyone else have this prob?
My average over that last year is 23 MPG. My worst was 18 MPG when the car was running rich this winter. My best tank was 35.3 MPG, and I had ~500 lbs of stuff in the car other than me at the time with the windows down :-D.
I run my tires at ~40PSI, I have a Y pipe, K&N air filter.

my mpg and how it increased 25%
I have a 1995 SE (AT) and I get about 340-350 miles per tank with about a 16.5 gallon fill-up...usually fill-up when the fuel light comes on. That puts me at about 21 mpg with about 50/50 highway/city driving in Southern California...probably average about 80-85 mph on the hwy and about 50 mph on city streets, but with a bit of stop and go on both during rush hour driving.
I used to get about 250 miles per tank, about 15 mpg, prior to replacing my coils, injectors, plugs, belts, IACV, and cleaning the MAF and TB. After doing all that, my mpg immediately went up.
I don't really notice much difference when I make a conscious effort to drive conservatively, i.e. slower acceleration, lower speeds, more coasting to stops, etc. I've tracked it closely several times and only got around a 2-3 mpg improvement.
Another big factor for me is the octane level of the gas I use. If I use regular 86 or 87 octane, I get 290-300 miles from a 16.5 gallon fill, along with noticeably poorer performance. If I spend about $3.00 more and fill up with premium 91 or 92 octane, it increases to the the 340-350 per tank range and I get better performance. I always think of it as paying for one extra gallon, but getting the extra mile-per-tank range of three gallons, so it is like getting two gallons for free.
I did try to save money for a while when gas prices shot up over the last couple of years by moving from premium down to regular, but since I realized that I was actually spending more money to go a shorter distance, I will never buy regular gas again.
Bottom line, to increase your mpg, clean or replace your air intake components (air filter, MAF sensor, TB, IACV, etc.) and use only premium (higher octane) fuel. These steps resulted in a 25% mpg increase for me on my completely stock car.

'99 SE 5-speed, drivetrain is box stock
24-25 mpg on my daily commute (lucky enough to have very little stop-n-go)
If I really featherfoot it on the highway I can barely touch 28 mpg.
Agree with the poster up thread that 5th gear needs to be taller. I figured that out after about two days of driving my new Max.

98 automatic 230,000 miles.
I get around 400 miles to a tank. Thats 50/50 mix driving Monday -Friday.
If I'm going on a trip mainly all interstate I get about 500 miles to a tank.
