Limited Slip Differential

I'm pretty sure Maxima's from the factory did not come with LSD. If some of them did how do you tell if it is one (other than doing a burnout)? I assume someone does make a LSD for 5 speed 4th gen. Maxima. Who makes it and where can it be bought? Another question is how hard is it to install, I assume you have to trip the tranny apart to put it in.

96+ I30t's had LSD, some canadian 4th gens had LSD, no US 4th gens had them, the 2001 AE has LSD, and the 2002-2003 had a helical lsd option. Quaife also made an LSD for us for a while but they quit making them.

As for your second question yes of course you have to take the transmission apart to install an LSD...

LSD is for cars in Canada. If your car is made in US then it's without limited slip differential. There isnt really a big difference between the 2. I heard you can even mix them. LSD is more expensive though.

I purchased and installed the Phantom Grip LSD about 3 months ago. Prior to doing the install, I had heard about the potential broken spider gears. In an effort to mitigate any damage, I opened my tranny, cryoed all the gears, synchros, shafts, and differential. I also replaced and cryo treated all the new bearings.

Pros: White smoke from both tires

Cons: Ocassionaly (this has happened twice), the LSD turn into a true locker and when making a u-turn, you can hear one of the tires hop/squeel 'a la 4X4 style'

Overall, I am a very happy customer with my LSD.

Actually, 2 da max is right. If you spin one wheel and the other one spins in the same direction than you have LSD. If the other wheel spins in the opposite direction than you have an open diff.
