Low Fuel Light

Just a quick question about the Low fuel indicator light.
I have tried to run my gas tank incredibly low to see when this light goes on. It is the small little light on the gas guage. But it never goes on. Is my bulb gone..if so how do i replace this. Or do only certain max's come with this option. Also a side note..how do u activate the low washer light if you do not have the cold weather pkg. 95 Max.

1. It might be your bulb - the low fuel light was standard on all 4th Gens. No real way to know if its the bulb or not unless you replace it. You have to pull the instrument cluster out to get to the bulb (same as getting to any gauge backlighting bulb).

2. I think you need to get the washer reservoir with the sensor built-in - not sure about the wiring though (i.e if its pre-wired or not).

you usually have 2 gallons of gas left when the fuel light comes on.

yeah its difficult to vaporize it with such little left int he tank, so the combust process becomes more and more difficult.

my low fuel light comes on about 1/6 - 1/8 of a tank. This light is more irritating than SES light. Get your bulb changed and don't run your tank down on purpose.

i don't use the light it hasn't worked for some time now, now insted i depend on the trip meter. It works good, i know once i'm around 300 miles time to fill up. The needle goes all over the place in my max, when i'm full it's over the line, and when i'm down to .5 gal it almost covers the light.... not to be trusted.

I think I may have figured out the problem for most maximas with this. However first you have to make sure that the light bulb is good. Let me ask you something, when you fill your tank to the max how far past F does the needle go? And when you are below the 1/4 tank sign, how much gas will your car take until it is full?

Sorry I don't have a manual, bought the 97 used.
Chiltons manual doesn't say crap.

There is 18.5 gallons in our fuel tank.

I have had a 95 and a 96 and neither really have the low fuel light come on. I know the 97+ come on but the 95/96 don't really. It could just be the bulb is out. It does not really bother me. I just get gas when the gauge is low. My dad's 02 dodge ram has a low fuel light and it beeps at you every once in a while. It does this at like at 1/4 tank though and it still has like 7 gallons or so easy.

Mine comes on with about 1.5 gallons left in the tank, but I always fill up with 5-8 gallons when it gets just below the 1/4 mark and I calculate my MPG every 800-1500 miles by filling up all the way.

to refueling when the guage is at 1/4 tank... Other than getting another 50 miles of driving before refueling, I don't see the point of waiting until you are almost down to the last drop to get refuel...the light is just a gimmick in my mind (mine works btw - there was virtually no gas in the car when I bought it) ... we already have a gauge (thats non-linear and inaccurate), so what makes the light any more accurate? - I am assuming the low-fuel light feeds off the same signal that signals the gauge....

How much gas have you guys put in. The max has a 18.5 gal tank and I've never put in over 16 gal, so I'm not at all surprised the light doesn't come on.

Our gas lights do not feed off the same signal. My gas guage reads 1/8 of a tank when my gas light goes on. it used to read E when the gas light went on. but i know that i get roughly 320-340 miles per tank.

If it is not your bulb it is a sensor in the tank. My low fuel light doesn't work either. Pull the bulb out and check it with 2 wires to you battery. If the bulb lights, it is the sensor in the tank. The part is around $101.00 at the dealer. I just said hell with it and don't run it that low.

It's on the dash. Should already be there so you just need that <$20 sensor (get it off the JRnissan site and use the "maxima" promo code). I haven't actually done it (yet) so I don't know where on the dash it is, but I'm sure it will be pretty obvious.

THE ONLY PROBLEM YOUR FRIEND HAS IS BEING AN IDIOT FOR NOT FILLING UP

Our tanks are 18.5 gallons, from then the light first comes on you have about 40 or so miles... I've driven with the light on for about that distance.. and filled upto 18 gallons..

'95-'97 should be within the strip of warning lights below the fuel gauge until '98, when the dash was mildly revised

'98-'99 it's just under the strip of warning lights under the temp. gauge.

here's the warning light layout on '98-'99

Left Side, under fuel gauge:
<Low Fuel><Door Open><Cruise><ABS><Brake>

Right Side, under temp. gauge:
<Battery><Oil><Washer Fluid><Seat Belt><SES>

I don't remember the warning light layout on '95-'97 dash's but I do remember on my sis's '97 Max, the low washer fluid light was in the strip of warning lights under the fuel gauge.

I don't have the cold/deluxe pkg. either but on a sunny day when the sun hits the dash, I can see a faint outline of where the light is. I'm thinking of doing this mod.
