How do you know if you're producing max HP potential?

I recently purchased my 1998 Maxima SE 5speed with over 90k miles on it. It now has close to 100,000. I've never really compared/raced my car with another stock 4th gen, so I don't know if my fwhp is at its max potential.

I did a tune-up as soon as I bought the car. I had a CEL for Knock Sensor and O2 sensor. I fixed the O2 sensor and the CEL light went away. I ASSUME the knock sensor is ok, too.

Anyone else have any suggestions on what I should check/replace? Thanks!

The knock sensor is probably not ok. Check the codes again, and even if the light goes away, the 0304 might still be there, mine was there for over a year before I realized I was missing out on a lot of performance, the KS was one of the most noticeable of all my "mods" on my car.

It's cheaper and more logical to test for codes and perform all routine maintenance, then go to the dyno, so that you eliminate all if not most variables for, if there is, lack of horsepower.

so how do I check to see if the code is still in there? DO the same thing as when I diagnosed my CEL? (Turning the screw by the accelerator to the left for like 2 seconds then to the right until the CEL starts blinking?) Or do I have to take it to a dealership for them to diagnose it?

Change the knock sensor! You won't regret it trust me.

I went from a best of 15.5 @ 89mph to a best of 14.7 @ 93.8mph. enough said.

maybe i'll go for the resistor bypass thingy that the FAQs say to do. IF i notice an increase in HP, then it's eBay time for a new KS!!

Why don't you just check the ECU for the 0304 code?

The KS code won't trip the light, it will just sit in there as a ghost code, until something else gets fubar'd.

Sounds reasonable. But is it possible that the KS is busted but NOT tripping a ghost code?

If in doubt check the resistance of the KS to see if it is in spec.

For just shy of 200 dollars, he could have bought a new KS, an ohm meter, and a Haynes/Chilton to check the specs.

But it could help, if money isn't a factor..

Thank you for being the Spoke Man for this user. I was just recommending, it is so much esier with the program, and you don't have to buy it. Yeh use the OHM meter and Haynes manual who said not too?

Wasn't being a spokesman, just giving him a cheaper option, as from the first post, he did not seem to know much about this subject, so he would, or still might go out and buy this when he didn't have to, hence not knowing until he shelled 160+, and the knock sensor cost, when all along he could have used the money for something else, just letting him know, IMO, the most effecient way.
