quick question about a 2001 5spd tranny in my 95 5spd max...
I am about to buy a 2001 5spd tranny from a junkyard....it comes with a 90 day warranty....the bellhousing however is cracked...my questions are simple...
1. would a force that caused a crack in the bellhousing damage the internals of the tranny I would have to rebuild?
2. is the only thing I would need are the axles from raxles.com (LSD ones of course)?
3. I plan on swapping my bellhousing with the 2001 bellhousing....will that work? will the internals of the 2001 slide right into my 95 5spd bellhousing? I know the tranny codes are the same except for the VLSD...did they change the bellhousing any?
4. lastly...I heard that when you do this swap, the shifter sits further back...which means the shift linkage connects into a slightly different location on the bellhousing??? so therefore I can't use my 95 bellhousing? cause the shift linkage opening wouldn't line up?

Ill say it once and probably everyone on this board will say the same thing...
....Find A Tranny that ISNT Cracked !!!!
For the bellhousing to be cracked the thing must have fell and took a pretty good shot...Internals are pretty well put together to cause any internal damage but if that outer shell is cracked the tranny is prettymuch worthless...
Dont risk it...I found mine with 10K on it for $800 shipped with a drivers side axle as well

it is local, so I could go look at it...should I even bother?
when my 95 tranny bellhousing was cracked...the internals were fine though...
where did you find that tranny? car-parts.com
there are almost no 2001 tranny's on there right now! there is 4 I think...including the cracked bell housing one...

bump bump bump bump....
anyone else have an opinion...should I even go look at it and check it out...it does have a warranty...
does anyone have any info on questions 3 & 4?

I think you are nuts to even think about it. What kind of deal is so low that you wouldn't just get another one elsewhere? I know it's tempting to go local but very low mile trannies are out there and in great condition. Got my 2k1 for $850 shipped with 13k miles.
damn where are you guys getting your trannies from? ~$800 shipped with ~15k!! I am in need of a tranny, (diff bearing getting me again) and I just want to know where online are good places so I can scope them out and order one, because this tranny starts leaking on my clutch and gotta throw everything out.
thanks
thanks
what is the diff between locking and non locking?
isnt the non locking the open diff?
thanks for the link, I'm seeing some trannies for around ~$800 thanks.
no more bearing trouble (once I get the money up
)

i dont recommend you buying a tranny thats got a craked housing. but your question about the 2k1 internals? i've heard and seen a 6spd from new max's thrown in a 4th gen housing and it worked. i belive it is the guy Jeff??? from max tuning in NY. hope this helps. and good luck finging a reliable tranny, but dont get that one.

granted the aftermarket LSD's you are listing are considerably better than a viscous lsd..., to me, going from an open diff to any LSD is a large improvement...plus the quaife (the one I really want is very very expensive) and for $680 I can get a younger, stronger tranny so I can finally put my S/C on....and get some sort of limited slip as well...
on another note, do you guys haggle with these junkyards? or is the price what it is?

I'm planning on the same swap. Correct me if i'm wrong, but dosen't the Quaife use a substantial amount of engine power?
I chose to do a OEM swap instead of going aftermarket VLSD because I don't want to deal with differential bearings on the 4th gen trannies.

this blows!!!! every 2001 LSD tranny was just bought up 2 days ago by maxima guys on here!!! I guess this was the season of swapping in trannies and stealing other maxima members dreams/ideas...
I wonder who the thieves are?
Hehe. The broken one is still on there. I got mine for $1450 CND shipped with both axles.
If your up to the task of swapping the gear box over go for it. Do the gears line up and rest directly on the bellhousing or are they enclosed in a self contained gearbox? If the later is true swapping the bellhousing should be now problem but you have to do the diff as well. No? How does a bellhousing crack? Seems very strong and far from the ground so...
I was also under the impression that the hardcore LSD's steal power. Anyone care to verify?
Yes, the tranny bolts in. All that is different is the axles due to the LSD.
