HID bulb question
HID bulb question
I had a few questions regarding HID bulbs. I have the Hanabi 7000k kit right now. Does anyone know if these are D2S or D2R bulbs? How long do these bulbs usually last? And lastly, when my bulbs go out, where do I get replacement bulbs (and can I get a different color bulb)?
Thanks

HID bulbs come in two common standards today known as: D2S and D2R. D2S uses the D2 base and a clear, naked bulb. D2R uses the same D2 base and a bulb with a metallic strip along one edge to combat unwanted glare in the reflector headlamp. So in OEM HID applications D2R is used in reflector-type HID assemblies whereas D2S is used in projector-type assemblies. When you're purchasing an HID kit, you want to go with a D2S bulb because it emits slightly more light than the D2R
So basically all you need to do is look at the bulb to find out.

D2R: Discharge second generation reflection
D2S: 3200 lumens, 4250K, 91lm/W, 35W
D2R: 2800 lumens, 4150K, 80lm/W, 35W
I don't know what lumen ratings aftermarket 7000K bulbs produce, but consider the above ratings as a standard when purchasing anything over 4100K.
As for finding replacement bulbs for aftermarket kits, it will become harder and harder because manufacturers are disappearing faster than you think.
Here's a quote from Mr. 108 from NHTSA HID kit ban :
"To date, NHTSA has investigated 24 HID conversion kit suppliers; all investigations have resulted in recalls or termination of sales.

Better stock up your bulbs now because it's a known fact that aftermarket hid kits usually die prematurely....
Most of the kits you see floating around ebay are probably excess inventories and the sellers are trying to get rid of them quick and cheap. As for warranties, forget about it if the manufacturer is on the list.

so i can't use bulbs that were meant for OEM applications? is the connection different or something? if so, is there any place to get bulbs for the hanabi kits still? so, soon there will be no way for me to get new hid bulbs without getting new ballasts and everything, or what would i have to do?
also, when i get new bulbs, should i get d2r or d2s bulbs (if i keep the stock housings.... not retrofit)? i should get the d2r, since it is in reflective housing, right?
