ABS Light, No Power, No Start, WTF?

Ok .. here's a good one for you guys to help me figure out.

Went out for a pack of smokes tonight, and when I slowed down to make a right hand turn, the ABS light came on, headlights dimmed, radio turned off and car started sputtering.

So, I heel-toe'd the gas to rev it up and the ABS light goes out and car stops sputtering. A few seconds later, after accellerating again, the radio comes back on.

Same thing happens when I slow down to pull into 7-11 parking lot. But, when I park and let the car idle all seems well. So, I shut it off and go get a pack of smokes and a can of Red Bull ...

Any way, I come out and the car won't even crank over. Radio and lights seem to work on, but when I hit the brakes, the headlights dim.

I wind up getting a jump from my father-in-law, and all seems well after I let it idle a bit. But, on the ride back home it does it again, so I have to heel-toe to keep the revs up when slowing down and down shifting.

Finally, I take out the battery and have pep-boys check it and they said it was ok and even charged it up. Car starts fine, no problems now.

But, I'm thinking either the battery is really screwed, or my alternator is bad. Anyone else have some similar problem or advice?

Thanks in advance and sorry for the long story

Sounds like the alternator is crapping out on you. It may be putting out enough power to keep the car going while running but not to charge up the battery for start up.

Mine is doing the same as we speak, I'll be changing it on Saturday.

That's what I figured. Where'd you pick yours up and how much was it? I've checked around and can't seem to find one for less than $200.

$75

I used to work at an auto parts store so I get a discount...
But I may be going to a distributor of alternators we had so they can build me a high amp alternator so I can run my current system...

My new system coming up is going to be sick.

You can get one for under $150, Bosch rebuilt...but you have to send back your old one. Free shipping, to and from.

same thing happened to me on my sentra. you ever get the dash lights flickering? My alternator was only putting out enough to drive. MAYBE have the radio on. FORGET about headlights though. I put those suckers on and i sucked the battery dead.

Crap, I paid $700 at nissan when mine went out. Although I was stranded in Atlanta, so there weren't many options.

Yes I can, I can get you in touch with the place and they can send it to you direct for that price.. the problem is the core charge... Its $50 extra you have to put down until you send yours back... so it kinda defeats the purpose. If you were local I'd get you rolling with it in no time.

sounds like your alternator is gone. You have a '97 so you likely fall under the alternator recall, go get a new alternator for free

I checked into the recall, it was already performed on the car. Ah well. Autozone has them for $159.99 in stock (including a $110 core).

Ant, I really appreciate you being able to hook me up, but I need to get this fixed ASAP and cannot wait for shipping.

Thanks all!
