Symptoms of bad coils? here's what i have

1998 max... bosch +4 plat plugs for past 6k miles.
New ECTS, fuel filter, mobile 1 syn, used chevron techron injector cleaner, cleaned throttle body,

Car is stalling alot at lights and stop signs. RPMs very inconsistent. Acceleration studders alot and is very jerky.

Sound like coil problem???

My guesses so far: TPS sensor, knock sensor, maybe wrong spark plug types, IACV, fuel pump, .... should i add coils too???

yes accelorating studdering is a problem associcated with coils. I just experianced this and it was 1 of my coils that were messed up. try testing your coils. and pm with which oine and i might have an extra one laying around.

if your rpms are jumping around, then most likely its going to be something in your ignition or fuel delievey. what codes are you getting?

I thought mine problem was with the coils to but it turned out to be a injector on cylinder of course under the im. So i replaced myself and saved $300+dollars. So dont rule out your fuel injectors.

1. It's not the knock sensor

2. Try changing to NGK coppers or plats. Cheapest possible fix

3. CEL? Any codes?

4. I doubt it is a fuel pump or IACV

5. My guess would be coils, MAF, or the plugs

6. I would try unplugging one coil at a time while the car idles. If the car starts to run worse then it's not that coil. If when a coil is unplugged and no change occurs then you have found your problem. Free, easy way to do some diagnostic.

Go buy a haynes manual from any autoparts store, or maybe try what I posted above

Got some SES codes:

01-long 02-short - Mass Air Flow Sensor
05-long 12-short - None Existent in ECU decoder ... wtf is this?

The MAF would cause the big stalling problem??? how much are we looking at?

I think i probably have bad coils though on top of other problems i may be having... not sure if coils could cause any CEL codes, but it feels like the car is running on 5 cyl instead of 6 half the time. The way the engine is reacting feels like something isn't igniting right..

Is there 1 type of coil or several?
From: http://www.nissanparts.cc/catalog/?section=438
I got the following prices for them. Prices are reasonable.

I think there's 1 for Left Side and 1 for Right hand. Should I just go for 1 of each to be safe??

Quantity Part # Description List Unit Price Price
1 22448-31U11 Coil Assy - Ign $78.51 $59.83 $59.83
1 22448-31U06 Coil Assy-ignit $71.92 $54.80 $54.80
1 22448-31U01 Coil Assy-ignit $75.38 $57.44 $57.44
1 22448-31U16 Coil Assy-ignit $75.36 $57.43 $57.43
Subtotal: $229.50

Excuse the newbishnish: Coils are the things that go on top of the Spark plugs right?

Theres two types, front bank and rear bank, and yeah the coils go on top of the spark plugs... If your not getting a Cel though (which would tell u what coil it was) then i don't know if you should bother getting a coil at all... i did and it didn't help so it looks like i wasted my money... first make sure u know what the problem is.

Dude, you did not get a misfire code that would indicate a spark problem. You got a MAF sensor code. That is what you need to be looking at.

MAFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF causes stalling........I just changed mine feels like a brand new car. What happens is the sensor of the maf is reading bad air/fuel so causes ur car to run bad. Just the short version if someone wants to EXPLAIN totally go right ahead but that just ur basic problem. Change the MAF and you won't stall.

Not about stalling...........just doesnt acccelerate cleanly (jumps a bunch when pushing the gas pedal hard) and then on top of that sometimes when the car is stopped at a light and just idling, the engine also feels like it jumps sometimes (slight jerk, or lose of power feeling)......

any more suggestions?

It's a coil problem. Had this happen recently to my 99 and also in the past with my 91. Like was said above, the easiest way to check it just disconnect each plug one at a time and see if one doesn't make a difference (that's the cylinder w/ the bad coil).

Great news guys, put in a new MAF today and car is running like a champ.

Also unplugged my coils one by one and car reacts to each one so i think all my coils are good. Also put in copper NGKs.

But all in all changin the MAF did it. Bought a used one from junk yard for $75 bucks... Dealer woulda charge 400+ i think for one of these.

Thanks for all you help guys.
