I decided to go buy grease to re-grease my starter, i havent done it yet becuase i am unsure of the grease i purchased. I got LITHIUM white grease.
its white obviously but it doesnt seem like it would be used in the starter. It doesnt really say it can be used on internal car parts. I got it from auto barn.

has ne one done this and used the correct grease? help

yea i saw that grease but i cant find it anywhere!! any alternal grease? where did ppl buy theres from. walmart is far from my house

I re-greased my starter. I used a High Temperature grease that was red in color but, I believe any grease will do as long as it is High Temperature. BTW, I got mine at Walmart but, any automotive store should have it.

I used Mobile 1 synthetic bearing grease. I think lithium is too thin for the planetary gears, and I think it has a tendency to gum up (based on experience using it on hood latches, etc.). Furthermore, lithium has a tendency to drip when you spray it (i.e., it is very thing at first), which worrys me, because if you spray it on the starter shaft, it might drip on to the flywheel and clutch itself = very bad. The high temp bearing grease will maintain its consistency, and I can say from personal experience that my starter has worked great ever since. You might also want to consider powerder graphite. I found a guy on the web who rebuilds his Land Rover starters with this. Maybe you could do a search on google and find the same article. Graphite seems good (for the gear shaft and electrical motor, not the planetary gears) because it comes on powder form, and therefore shouldn't drip or gum up.

I re-greased my starter with LITHIUM White a year ago, no problem.
Got it at PepBoys for $5 or $6 bucks

when i replaced my starter i went to nissan and asked them what they would suggest and the shop mechanic gave me some lube in a hand towel and sent me on my way i have had no problems with the starter since...suggestion go to nissan

 

i used some generic high temp grease not really sure what it was and worked fine. did it a lil over 2 yrs ago and not a noise since

 

Get some high temp grease from Autozone or Pep Boys or similar.

 

I used the walmart brand. It was red grease high temp synthetic. No problems in 4 months. I think the big thing is to get that old grease out of your starter.

 

Order a tube of Amsoil High Temp Synthetic Grease. I have down 2 Maximas and they work perfectly. There are Amsoil Dealers on the forum that can get it for you!

 

I did mine with Mobil 1 (same as Julchen) this summer. Its getting cold now, 20 degrees or below, and the noise is back. Did everything I was suppose do, cleaned it good, worked the grease in. I only had and have the noise when it gets under 32 degrees...

Probably have to do it again next summer.
