help! I lost 3rd and 4th gear!
My tranny has been acting kinda weird lately...it would intermittently be extremely difficult to put into gear, i would almost have to hit the shifter to get it into/out of gear. Then, it would all of a sudden work like it should. (it's got about 180k on it too) Anyway, I was driving down the freeway today, and I was making the 3-4 shift, and i started to apply the gas after i was in 4th, and it just free revved. So i shifted back into 3rd and it was gone too. I still had 5th, so i left it there and got off at the next exit. I still have 1, 2, 5, and reverse, so i drove to the stealership...but they were so busy that I ended up going home. I can drive it for now, but i'm gonna have to fix it, so i'm wondering, has anyone had this happen and how much am i looking at to fix it? Am I gonna have to get a new tranny or rebuild? Please help! Thanks!

I must commend you for have an 96 tranny that lasted 180K, mine started leaking out the input shaft at 98K, It seems like you will need a new tranny, I'm sure it could be rebuilt but it may cost more in labor to replace those gears and get everything back functional, this would be a perfect oportunity to get a 2K tranny with a stronger 3rd gear, and wont have to worry about any diff bearing problem with the 96-98 trannies.
I've never experience a dead gear but I imagine it could be good, Atleast you have 1,2,5, and reverse, you can get around, first to launch, and run 2nd to about 60mph and have 5th at ~2K, hope you just dont have a lot of traffic to go thru, atleast till you get a new tranny and if you drive around with 1,2,5 you'll have good throttle responce in 2nd in your transition to 5th.
www.car-part.com, has some trannies you can look up for your state, max price I've seen is $1k and dealerships quotes me at $1.6K minimum so getting your own then taking it to the dealership would save you money.
good luck and keep us posted.

it will fit just fine, its an exact fit. many peple on the org have them in and love the new tranny, once I get enough money saved up I'll get rid of my tranny (bearing failure starting again) and slide in a 2k

it was the original tranny. I was surprised it lasted that long too, with the way i drive. hehe...anyway, i ended up with a 97 Neptune Blue Metallic SE...I'll post pics sometime...Oh, and it's an auto....I miss shifting. I'm planning on fixing the 96 this summer, so I'm gonna look into a 2k-2k1 tranny. Thanks!
