95 decided not to start

First post to a great forum! Thanks...

Last night my wife was out shopping and pulled in to a service station to fill up. Afterwards, tried to start the car and nothing. Key in the ignition, little click from under the hood, all panel lights, headlights, CD, heater, etc., ran fine. Left all the lights on and nothing dimmed when the key was turned. I ruled out the battery and thought the problem may be the starter. Any suggestions before I have it towed to the dealer?

1995 Maxima GLE
105K miles

Thanks again!

Ignition switch or starter. You can replace either. Dealer will charge arm and leg.

Take a long screwdriver and tap the side of the starter solenoid. If it starts, then you have a dirty starter. This is a very common problem with the starters in our maximas, and there have been many threads lately driving this issue home. Do a search with my user name. If this is the problem, then the very cheap solution is just to disassemble the starter, clean and lubricate it.

Good Luck,

Greg

he wont be able to use the regular search unless he donated on his first post. use the poor man's search. Itll lead to the same thing, ignition switch or the starter, my guess its the starter since its clicking.

Thanks for the advice, folks! I'll try the screwdriver trick and then either tear down and clean or swap out. Looks like AutoZone carries them for around a hundred bucks with the limited lifetime warranty. Tried to do a search but it tells me that it's offline for registered users or something like that.

Thanks again for the help!

Mine did the same thing. I started getting intermittent no crank conditions. A click and nothing else. If I turned the key about 40 times or so, I could eventually get it to start and then it would be okay for a day or maybe 3 weeks. Finally when it let me down at lunch with the guy sfrom work, I had to fix it. It was the starter. I picked up a reman from the local Nissan dealer where I know the parts guy. All worked perfectly again on my 95 SE 5-Speed.

It was the starter. Tapped the solenoid and it turned right over. Picked up one from AutoZone and started on it late yesterday. I read somewhere where some guy replaced his in 15 minutes. He must work in a pit crew because you have to remove all the air filter housings/ducts and then try and break the starter attach bolts. It takes at least a 3 foot cheater bar to bust open the 17mm bolt.

Starts just like it's supposed to now.

Thanks again for the assist.
