New Mass Air Flow didn't fix

My 96 has had CEL problems since I got it 1.5 years ago. About a year ago I replaced the MAF sensor since the ECU said it was bad and the car would die due to quick RPM drop when coming to a quick stop. I got a MAF sensor from a junkyard and it immediately fixed the problem. Now about a year later the same problem is back - DTC 0102 - MAF sensor - and the car's RPMs drop quickly (almost to 0) when coming to a quick stop. I bought another MAF from a junk yard but it didn't fix the problem. The guy was gracious and let me exchange it for another one that he just took off of a running car and I put it in but still the same problem. The only other code the ECU is producing is 0304 - knock sensor - but I figure this code might go away when the MAF is fixed.

Two questions: am I making a mistake going to a junk yard - maybe it's hit or miss in finding a good MAF sensor that is compatible with my car's ECU?

What other sensors or components are on the MAF circuit that might be leading to the Mass Air Flow trouble code?

I'm way overdue for renewing my tags because of passing emissions, so thanks for quick responses!!!

re setting your ecu may help it to pick up the new MAF?....also check your TPS....that will make your RPM fluctuate

Yea I've tried resetting ECU multiple times to no avail. To clarify the RPM issue, it doesn't fluctuate at idle - they drop quickly when coming to a quick stop, and sometimes it doesn't have to be a quick stop. It's like the tach instantly drops almost to 0 when you start to get on the brakes.

sorry I was away for a few days. The idle rpms are OK i think. the tach doesn't fluctuate - steady 5-6 hundred once it's warm. it's weird how the needle drops so suddenly when i stop quickly. If it's not the MAF that's tripping that code, what else could it be? Thanks!
