How would you describe the noise - mine is doing it to - when the engine is cold/with light throttle , it sound like bad valve train or a sewing machine
once the engine is at normal temp - its all quitet. It only happens in winter.

Sounds almost like an exhaust leak. It's verry retarded and muffled sounding. It is comming from right below the IACV(where hte BPT vavle is). You can hear it LOUDLY when you rev the car when your head is under hte hood.
mine does the same thing - it looks like it will be PITA to replace it - unless you are planing on engine swap.
besides the retarded sound - it does not affect anything ( no dtc )
