and got 0407, Crankshaft Position Sensor. To give the background, I was out doing some last minute x-mas shopping, car was running fine, and I turned it off to go into a store. When I came back out, tried to start her up, and nothing! All I can hear is the relay in the fuse box clicking when I turn the key, the engine doesn't attempt to turn over. Like I said, I pulled code 0407. Could a bad CPS, or maybe both of them cause this?? The car is a 95 Max auto. Any info would be greatly appreciated as it is badly needed! Do the 2 sensors cost alot? Are they easy to replace? My brother is handy around cars, and I would like it if he can do the work to keep the costs down. The car has experienced some hard starting for quite some time. Anything??

 

Bad crank sensor would definately cause that. But remember, look at the stickies closely as to which crank sensor it is... there are 2, one in the front of the engine by the belts REF and one by the bellhousing where flywheel is at... POS

 

is this a job that could be done by my brother? He has basic knowledge. I would love to take care of this without getting a shop or dealer involved. I guess my next step is to test the sensors? Any idea on how much either of them cost? Thanks for the quick reply Ant96GLE!

 

I dont know how much they cost... my front crank sensor is throwing a code.. the REF one...

0407 is the crank REF sensor.. which is where your belts are at.. under the crank pulley. Its actually very easy to change... it only has 2 bolts and a plug. I'm more than sure your brother can if he can do small jobs like brakes or the such.

 

The same thing happened to me and I got a new starter and has never came back on again. Same code.

 

What code? A bad starter wont show a code

 

0407 CAN be a no start. The ECU gets hte signal from the Crank REF sensor to control timing, w/o it, it will not work.

 

I replaced my CPS on a 1992 maxima VE. Its ran me about 225 for the sensor. I always get my electrical parts from autozone because they use wells who is subcontracted by nissan. For example if you bought a coil pack from autozone it would have a nissan stamp and oe numbers but come in a wells bag. hope this helps!

 

sometimes you can just clean those crank sensors off and they work good as new again! That is what a friend and I did on his 96 when he got those codes.

yeah... he fried his clutch and the sensors were covered with metal shavings!

 

Yup thats what happens

most of the time if you take it out and clean it off, it will work fine. Just make sure the wiring is okay. But its more than definately the sensor thats dead
