Oxygen Sensor question...

Normally I'm on the 3rd Gen Forum, but I have a question for a friend of mine.

She has a 1996 GXE and has been quoted what seems to be an outrageous price for an oxygen sensor to me. She hasn't been driving it recently because it didn't pass smog because of a faulty sensor. She says that she's been hit on the same side as the oxygen sensor, and it was likely damaged, but repair shops are telling her that it will cost her from $2,000 - $4,000 to repair.

Outside of her not being able to pass smog, the car runs just fine. Because I'm not all that familiar with the 4th Gens, I was curious to find out where the oxygen sensor is located and if pulling the fender apart is necessary to fix it.

Thanks in advance!

there are 2 O2 sensors located in the ypipe, and then one sensor right behind the catalytic converter. No need to remove the fender just jack up the car and test them out.

www.oxygensensors.com has good prices on brand new sensors.

So there are a total of 3 oxygen sensors? Wow!!! Is it possible for the two oxygen sensors located on the y-pipe to get installed in each other's place? If so, would that possibly screw up a smog certification? I thought there were only two oxygen sensors - I think the 3rd Gens only have one...

Thanks for the info. I'll let her know that these guys are trying to take advantage of her not knowing about her car. Thanks so much!

Not sure if the O2s could get mixed up or anything. I do know they are definetly taking advantage of her.

I believe the 2 in the ypipe are the same basically, but don't take my word on that.

there are 3, does she have a CEL for them? if so it should specify which o2 is faulty and save time/headache figuring out which o2 is faulty.

there somewhat easy to get to, excelt the first one in the y-pipe its up and cramped in there. But $2K-$4k to change an o2 sensor? wow they must really think shes stupid by trying to take advantage of her that badly.
