VI not opening, VERY frustrating.

My MEVI opens like 1 out of 10 times. I feel like my car is so slow without the VI. I mean think about it, you lose so much torque from the VI that when it doesn't open up the car feels slower than stock!! I have the Harlan switch but the problem seems to be more and more frequent.
I have a friend who is planning on the DE-K manifold. I might switch.....it's a tough decision considering all the work and money involved.

More and more frequent.... - Couldnt that mean the switch IS going bad?

Lurch- Get a Summit switch, its like $50 and it opens for me everytime. I have the same problem along with a bad solenoid. I replaced both and haven't a problem since.

I can almost guarantee it is the harlan switch. this is exactly what it does, it's done it to tons of people. get a summit switch, so far as I know, dave b is the only person who isn't totally convinced that the summit switch is much better.

Yep, my Summit switch flaked out far more than my Harlan did. I noticed that if you set the Harlan to 5400rpms, the flake outs happen less often because the butterflys aren't opening and closing so rapidly on upshifts. The other thing I liked about the Harlan was that it allowed me to wire in a toggle switch for manual switchover operation if the Harlan flaked out on me during a 1/4 mile run. The Summit switch wouldn't work with the toggle switch. My Harlan flaked out about once in every 20 operations. My Summit switch flaked out all the time and I never got a clean 1/4 mile pass with it. I'm also convinced the Summit would flutter the valves and sometimes close them shortly after opening them.

I suggest wiring in a toggle switch and raising the switchover to 5400rpms and see what happens.

I forgot to mention, don't bother running a relay either. That really seems to cause a lot of the flake out problems.

I'm glad I don't have to worry about this anymore. My MEVI is off the car now. It's pretty freaking fun with the stock manifold and JWT ECU. The power from 3300-5500rpms is quite nice though it doesn't have any power above 6200rpms now. My intake is a hell of a lot louder too. I forgot how loud the intake is with the stock manifold and that's with the stock resonator and the hacked airbox.

For what I hear I think its better with Stock Manifold.

With the USIM/ECU you don't lose torque so you're just adding torque on top of what you have, but still bad top end power. With the MEVI/ECU you're gaining back the low end torque lost with just the MEVI and increasing it up on the top end majorly.

They tell the solenoid when (rpm) to switch channels to allow for vcuum to activte the "power valve" to open, which in turn changes resonance within the manifold and allows for better high rpm breathing. Anything above 5200 seems optimal, people have their own preferences.

wow, many good responses. Well I already bought the Summit switch but someone else has it right now. (long story, I will be getting it back soon though) So what would be some symptons of a bad vacuum? (delayed opening?)
