HID install problem, need advice please

Well I just got a "plug and play" 9004 kit from the group deals, and when I tried to install them last night, they didn't turn on.

I plugged everything in properly (the plugs couldn't be confused), the bulbs, igniter, and the ballast. I'm not sure why they didn't work?

Here's a pic of the stock 9004 passenger side harness. I think the blue wire is the high beam, the green is the low, and the black wire is the ground, right?

Here's a pic of the harness that came with the kit.

Does that look like it matches up correctly? Looks like the ground wire is in the middle? I'm not sure since I'm definitely not an electrical whiz.

When I turned on the lowbeams, nothing happened at all, but when I tried flipping to the high beams, I blew out both my 15A headlight fuses inside the engine bay. I'm not sure what to do at this point, can anyone give me some advice? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

on your original 9004 socket..the ground wire is not in the middle, so just switch the black wire on your harness to match up with the ground..the other 2 wires do'nt matter

Ah, that's what I was hoping to hear. Thanks! Did the kit come accidentally packed with a 9007 harness piece then?

Would there have been any damage from me trying to turn them on with the ground wires reversed?

Yup that what happened to me also. I was pissing mad because I had been dying to get HIDs and when I finally got them, I thought they didn't work. Just switch them and they should be find. Switching can be a pain so I bridged mine.

I wired up the harness incorrectly on my first attempt, making the same mistake that you did. It's not a big deal, and no damage should come of it. As for the harness, I believe the 9004 and 9007 kits come with the same one (the bulbs fit a bit differently but the harness is the same). You're missing a wire because you're now missing your high beams, naturally.

One mistake I did make was leaving the bulbs in those plastic cases (which seemed thick and tough) while wiring it up because I didn't want to touch them. But when I tested them and they came on, the cases didn't last long before they started to turn to goo. Just a heads up.....

Thanks for the info. My peeve now is this: Aren't all 9004 sockets and harnesses the same? The wires should always be in the same order, right? Why would they include wiring harnesses inside a 9004 kit that don't correspond correctly to the standard 9004 wiring? They must have either bungled up, or just included the wrong harness.

I contacted umnitza and he's looking into it right now.. Hope he can figure something out. Last thing I'd want is a set of $280 paperweights.

Do you guys think splicing the wires and using electrical tape would be sufficient? I looked at the harness yesterday and the plugs do look like a pain to switch.

try the switching of the ground wies and before you fire them up just be on the safeside and double check the 2 yellow headlight fuses right next to the battery. good luck!

From the look of the harness in your last picture, you should be able to just pull the black wire (ground) out of the socket and switch it into the correct position. (I don't remember if the ground is supposed to be on the left or right). Basically, you just want the ground wire from your cars 9004 harness to be connected to the ground wire on the HID kit, so just look at how they plug in together and match them up. The socket on the HID kit should come apart pretty easily.

Yeah, but maximabest wasn't responding to the GD thread at the time I ordered them, and I wasn't sure if he was coming back. At least umnitza has been very quick in their reponses and may send a corrected harness to me, so well see how that works out.

In any case I'll try the splice and dice tonight. Will post pics if I can get them working.

Thanks for everyone's responses, you guys have been ultra helpful.

Got it to work!

Got it to work! The wires were just reversed and it was a simple fix. Here's the picture of my poor wiring job:

The right dead end wire on is for the high beam, so it's not in use anyways.
