CV Boots
Just took my car for an oil change and the mechanic said that both of my boots need replacing. I had been hearing a clicking for a few months, so I believe him.
Question, how much longer can I drive it like that before having a problem and really what's the worst that can happen by driving it like this.
What's a good price for getting a CV job done?

I just replaced both my pass side CV boots, they are about $40 each, but you would need to replace the entire CV joint at this point.
btw, would you be able to make the meet tomorrow afternoon? Markham at 12, same spot

heh... i JUST did this today for my 97 i30... (good timing).
only difference was that my passenger side CV boot *broke*. i had went another 4700 or so miles before getting it replaced today. first of all, i wouldn't bother replacing boots because the boot costs almost as much as the entire remanufactured axle (after getting the core charge back). dealers were quoting me 50 for one boot while the entire cv assembly was 60+55 core.
to answer your questions... by the time it's clicking, your bushings are already messed up and you will definitely need to replace the cv axle. i can't tell you how much longer they will last but probably not very much longer at all. get it fixed!
to give you an idea, firestone was charging me 200 for part and 115 for labor = 340 after taxes. i got mine done for 150 with part and labor all together. trick is finding a trustworthy mechanic. also depending on which side needs to be replaced, the mechanic might charge you more. the passenger side cv assembly is longer and has a lock in the middle that adds significantly more time for them to replace.
lastly, after it's done, you will DEFINITELY need an alignment.
good luck and get this done... at this point, i would say you are seriously neglecting your car.
