Starter problem?
#1
I got a 1995 Max with 135k+ on it. This is what happens.
I'll start my car in the morning, lunch, and home it is fine. If I were to stop at a convenient store before work or whatever, and shut off the car, the car would not start. It'll take anywhere between 40mins to 1.5hrs before the car starts. Weird? You can hear a ticking sound but the car does not start, battery is fine all power window and cd works. I am guessing the starter, right? What brand at the local auto store should I be getting? Anybody had similar situations?

Well, that is out of the question. I have a 3 month old Red Top Optima battery, so no I cannot and will not blame my battery.

That being said, we should also remember that there have been many reports of starter failures on the '95 Maxima. Later starters had design changes which made them more durable. The later starters are compatible with the '95 engine.
Starter replacement is a job which can be done by the home mechanic.
No need to jack the car, the starter motor is accessed from above.
Remanufactured units are available for $140 (Brand X) up to $360 (Bosch).
If done by a professional the labor charge ought to be one hour.
Make written notes of the radio station presets. Disconnecting the battery will cause the radio and clock to experience "amnesia".
1. Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery.
2. Remove the air intake duct and the air cleaner housing assembly.
3. Disconnect the battery cable and the solenoid terminal connection from the starter solenoid.
4. Remove the two starter motor mounting bolts and remove the starter from the engine. These bolts may be really tight!
Installation of the starter is the reverse of steps 1-4, above.
Set the clock to the correct time. Refer to the notes made in step 1 to restore the radio station presets.

Don't forget to make a note of the time, too, before disconnecting the battery.
